Spool in a gov-loc carrier?

cough cough, you know it must be nice to have a friends that will swap you a set of 4.10 axles for a set of 4.56's just because he is a helluva nice guy /forums/images/graemlins/screwy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif. Now if he can just get his 4.10's that he has sold, and get his wifes car running so he can can have his dually back he will be a happy man. You know this guy? /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Oh, you also have the cost involved with setting up the new gears and shim kit on the open carrier, unless you can do that yourself! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif And don't forget the cost of the detroit if you go that way instead of welding the spiders.

You could spend a couple hundred for a gov-loc replacement spool or $150-$200 for a new open carrier, $50 for the shim kit to install the new carrier, and $400 for a Detroit.
So let's see, $200 for a spool or up to $650 trying to setup a Detroit in a gov-loc'ed 14 bolt.

There are no carrier shims in a 10.5-inch 14-bolt. Swapping carriers is a breeze. First, check the current backlash reading. Then yank out the old carrier, move the ring gear from the old carrier to the new carrier, and install the new carrier. Now adjust the bearing adjustment rings until you have the backlash set to where it was before you started. Tighten all bolts to spec, close it up, fill it up, and drive. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Swapping just a carrier is WAY easier than doing a full ring and pinion swap. You get to skip all the hassles with getting the pinion depth set just right. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

You are right. I completely forgot about the adjustment rings... I guess I was thinking more in lines of the D60. Good catch, at least someone is reading my post! /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

I would be very intrested. if he were to make them he would sell tons of them. what do we need to convice him to start making them.

I guess the whole trick would be to find out JUST how interested people are? When I spoke with him, he was open to the idea, and didn't think that it would take long at all to set it up and produce them. I'm going to try and get a gov-loc carrier and mail to him so he'll have it to play with.
