Spray Painting My K5

I'm toying with the idea of spay painting my K5 flat black similar to Dblazer - I have a Wagner Power Painter (no - it wasn't a Christmas present - I bought it in October). What kind of paint would you guys recommend? I know I'll need to tape the hell outa my truck beforehand and I want to keep my top on and paint it as well. What kind of prep work would be involved with that? I'm just trying to get some ideas and as much info as I can before I get any deeper into this "idea". I know I need to replace my rockers first. How hard is that? (Already have LMC catalog). Right rear quarter needs replacing, too. Is this a one man job? Thanks for any thoughts, comments, advice, etc.

I'm also planning on spray painting my future K5. i'm gonna paint it camo. I think the more you prep the body with sandpaper, the better the paint job will look. I don't know too much about painting with a rattle can cause I have never done it. I would also like to kearn some morebefore I do it.

Whatever you paint it with, prep work is what you need to pay attention to... Make sure you have combated any rust (so you dont have to see it again) give the surface you are painting some "tooth" (by anything as severe as 80 grit paper to a scotchbrite) And before you paint make sure to wipe everything down with a wax and grease remover (like Acryliclean) All this wont give you a show quality paintjob but will at least keep it on at the carwash

Prepping shmepping. I put zero effort into prepping my rig. Hell I didnt even wash it. It turned out fine. It isnt show qyality but show quality wont get you home at the end of the day. I figured why put that much effert onto p[aint when I know it wont last a single trip out without getting scratched up. Anyways, thats me!!!! hehehehehe

I'm with you Nashu, I once rattle canned a V-6 Vega I built. I used Chevy Blue engine enamel

. My prep consisted of wiping the crud off the car with an old T-shirt. I did mask most of it, but I painted it outside in a friends yard. It actually turned out pretty good and lasted about 3 years!
When my body work is done on ol tRusty its geting painted with something a little more durable. I have some pretty cool friends and between a couple of them I ended up with 3 gallons of 'Endura'. This is a tough paint so it should last. It'll be a dark medium red metallic with a touch of pearl in it. Don't laugh please, when you get free paint you don't get to choose the color!

I even found someone to paint it for me for $300 CDN.
My only real goal body wise on my Jimmy is "No rust, One color!" anything beyond that is a waste of time for me! So no worries, it won't be some Show truck/Trailer Queen!

I know that ol' street rodders use to use house primer to paint their cars due to the thickness of the paint and spraying it in the front yard. Flat black ended up looking great, lasts a long time, able to re-spray if need be.

how about using something like herculiner on it. i was down in carlisle and saw two trucks with this stuff all over them and my buddies and i thought they looked pretty cool.one was orange on the outside w/ black on the inside. another one was all red on the outside w/black on the inside. herculiner doesn't make different colors but other companies do. prep work would be wax&grease remove,sand,wax&grease remove again. you can sand w/80 grit and get away w/it because this stuff is thick. your body work doesn't have to be the greatest either and the stuff is more chipp resistant than any paint.you can even put it on w/a roller. in my truck bed i used red and put black racing stripes down the middle. you can go to wall mart and get duplicolor which is the cheapest($50/gallon) or herculiner($100/gallon) or spend up to about $250/gallon depending on company and color.if you want more durable one get one that requires a hardner. it will probably be a urathane which is good. in one offroad magazine they compared companies and speedliner was the best, but also expensive.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'm not planning on turning this truck into a show piece - I'm just tired of looking at the rust, so I want to replace that and apply a cheap paint job. I'm not worried about scraches either - it's gonna get them no matter what cause it is a "woods" truck. No Emron for this truck either - cheap ($$) stuff!

Someone on this board painted the outside of his blazer with a bed linner. It was all black/ looked pretty cool. If you do a search you can probably find it. IO can't remember the guy's name but I know that the blazer had a 4 inch suspension lift and had some cool 35 inch tires that he got for cheap cause he baught them used from a race truck after 1 use.

I have an idea, scroll to the top of this page and click on "Trail Map" then select CK5 merchandise and order up as many CK5 stickers as you can and plaster them all over the Blazer untill you can't see the paint anymore. After a while they will start to come off, but this isn't a problem, simply re-order as needed.

Ha ha! Car Craft bought an old Buick land barge, just to get the 455 to install into an El Camino or something. Before yanking the engine they covered the entire body with zilliions of bumper stickers and made it a convertible, using a Sawzall.

They drove it around for a while before yanking the engine and scrapping the body.

I do paint and body work for a living.
Prepping is everything but if you are going to use a rattle can who cares, Just have fun.
I spray Imron every day on 800,000 to 1 million dollar motor homes. Such owners that are in there are Rusty Wallace.
Dale earnhardt, and Jr, Alot of the top fuel funny car owners and alot of millionaires. Now if I buy the paint for my vehicle through work its about $38 a gallon if I go downtown its $140 a gallon. So you see there is alot of mark up in Imron.
If I had to buy it like most people do downtown I would be buying a rattle can to.

This only cost me $450 I did all the prep work and went in to the shop to mask it all off. Shop around and ask the dealers if if they will give some kind of price brake for doing the same. Ultimate lining comes in about 6 or seven stander colores but can be mixed to any costum color for an additional 100 bucks. I chose the standerd blue, it changes from blue to black depending what angle you look at it.
I also did a lot of body work but you get the picture.
