Square driveshaft question...

has any one used a square drive shaft in the mud or sand? seems like mud/sand could get in between the two tubes and start to wear the metal down after a while. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

hey thanks I guess it was someone else I saw, is there something you could put inbetween the two shafts to act as a sealer like some king of rubber ring? Just a thought. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Hey micah would you happen to have a black blazer that has a ck5 sticker across the front of the window? My neighbor Roy said he had a friend who had a blazer and we went to his house and there was a blazer with a ck5 sticker on it. Is that you?

Nope, mine is white...see it here

the black one, if you found it in Pflugerville, belongs to another buddy named Jeff. There are 4 of us with built K5's within a 1/2 mile of each other here in Pflugerville.

Since you won't get a very balanced shaft with the square tube, I don't think you'll want to run them in the mud, sand, or anywhere that will call for high speeds. As for wearing them down, I don't think its worth worrying about. it would take a while to wear through 3/16 or 1/4 inch /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

What would happen if you run the square drive shafts in the mud? Crazy vibrations when at high RPM's?

Depends on how good a job you do. If you keep it very true, fairly well balanced, and with minimal slop, it should be fine. Probably not even noticeable over a set of big Swampers. But if half-assed, you would probably need new fillings and pinion/output bearings after a few passes at the pit...

would it be able to be balanced? i might weld it up and take it to get balanced. the fastest ive ever gone at the dunes was 40 mph and that was rough, suspention can handle going over chatter bumps 1 ft deep and 1.5" across. i also run in 4wd in the winter on the roads, so the balance would definately be noticible.

If you build it right and get a little lucky you won't have to balance it. I have seen one built that wasn't balanced and gets run at highway speed with little or no vibs.

Okay, I guess if I do make one, I will have to do an extra special job to save me money in the future /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

If you use 1410 yokes for 4" tube it fits the 2.5" tube better and 1410 yokes for 3" tube it fits the 2" tube better.
