I have had my M1009 since January and i have decided to go ahead and start my build.
Last night i ordered a 4" lift from ORD with the HD springs in front and zero rates for the rear. i'm also going to be swapping the axles for a D60/14BFF combo with 4.56s.
tires are still up in the air. i was thinking about cramming 37s and cutting the fenders up. but my buddy has a grand Cherokee on 35s that look big enough.
as for the kind of tires i can't decide if i want the Truxus M/T or TSLs.

So far i haven't done much with the truck. i have removed the NATO slave cable. put in a center console out of a 2010 Tahoe, and a Solargizer.

Go with the 37s. the 35s might look small on your truck compared to the 35s on the jeep.

I would go with some TSLs. Or whatever you can find on craigslist used

sounds like an awesome direction. IMHO these trucks dont look right with less than a 4in lift and 35's, but that combo is just about perfect for a well rounded, street driven rig. Others will chime in about the gearing vs tire size, im not that knowledgeable on what is best. but 4.56 gears without overdrive, even with 35's kinda makes me cringe as far as highway driving goes.

tire selection will depend on what youre gonna use the truck for. Ive been a big fan of BFGoodrich K/O's, had them on the wrangler i used to have. quiet and fuel efficient on the highway, and enough to get me through some light trail use. never got stuck. and good in the snow. My truck currently has Goodyear MT-R's on it, and i LOVE them. Mud, Snow, Highway use, they do it all, and i like the way they look (im a fan of raised white lettering). however, im going to H1 rims, and a 6in lift because the truck has acheived toy status, so ill be switching to TSL's in 38-42in variety.

cant wait to see how it turns out :waytogo:

the BFG all terrains are a great tire. if this were going to be a daily driver i would definitely get them.
I thought about the KM2 but don't know how they would handle thick mud.

Sweet rig, will look better with 4" lift, that my opinion anyway.

Welcome to CK5.COM!

Im looking forward to seeing the truck as the build goes, please keep us posted!

I think i have made up my mind for wheels and tires. had my eye on recentered H1s from trailworthy fab with the take off goodyears.

Definately do a bit of thinkin on the H1's, Im doing it because i think its cooler than all hell, and i like the military theme of the M1009, but dont forget that those wheels, are gonna limit your tire options. The military take offs are a good option, if you can get em. Darned things are always on the other side of the country from me. There are still super swamper options for the 16.5in rim, but im not sure about anything beyond that. I want to run 40in tires so im probably gonna go with IROC's myself. (yeah yeah theyre actually 39.5in)

My wife's brother in law has a military pickup (M1008 or whatever) and he got a good deal on some stock H1s with the 36" bias ply tires on them. His truck has the same axles you're using, also with 4.56 gears. I don't think he has a lift on the truck at all and the tires fit good. They may rub a little on more severe terrain, don't know. They are stuffed up in the wheel wells pretty good though, especially in the rear. I believe he said his top speed may have increased some with the 36s over the stock size tires. That would make sense.

with the 4.56 you need at least 37's to do 65mph. I have a 4inch lift but will be switching it out with a 6 inch due to rubbing. you could cut the fenders but I don't want to. If you will mostly drive on the road get military take off if not get the truxus. Any other questions let me know. I have done a lot of work to both of my military trucks (08 and 09)

i dont plan on doing any highway driving with it, this is my play vehicle. i have no problem cutting up the fenders. stuck with 4 inch because i didn't want to go through the whole drive shaft deal, even though it isnt anything special.
maybe in the future i'll jack it sky high but for now i think this set up suits my needs.

Last night i placed the order with Trailworthy Fab. Wheels and tires are two weeks out. shipping was a little pricey because of where i live but I'm pretty excited to see them.
I got a set of 4 12 Bolt HMMWV re-centers with pressed centers, full rock ring welded on and the 37" Goodyears

Excited to see this build. I got the same tires on my m1009 and I really like them. Havnt done any offroading with them but they are great on the road. You wont have to cut up the rear wheel wells but you will have to trim the backs of the front fenders. You will have to do something with your rear driveshaft though. My stock one vibrated like crazy so I put in a double cv shaft that I had leftover from my other truck ( glad I held onto to it for 3 years :) )

Okay, now you got me interested in your DS... I hate to jack the thread, but what truck did you get the shaft out of, and was it a direct bolt up??

Sorry to the OP, but I got bad vibes I need to 86!

Sorry, I should have clarified the DS came from my 89 k5 trail rig. Back in the day it just had a 4" lift and 1/2 tons still. It vibrated bad so I bought a new dbl cv shaft for it and I kept it when I did all the axle swappin and drivetrain changes cause I knew someday I would probably own another k5

So i finally had a chance to tear apart the truck today. turned out to be a bigger pain in the ass than i anticipated. funny thing about old bolts they don't want to move. much like old folks on the way to the retirement home.
I'm doing the work at a buddy's house because i live in a condo with no garage. right now it is sitting on stands with no rear axle. waiting for tomorrow. kinda disappointing that i didn't get it done.

Ok, took longer than i thought but i was missing the spring plates and hadd to order them. got them from wfoconcepts.com great place to do buisiness with had the plates in two days with USPS shipping. and they threw a can coozie in the box :waytogo:

yesterday i got the rest of the stuck bolts out with my friends fire and mini sledge. not really looking forward to the front. seems like its going to be worse. way more rust upfront that in the rear.

these wheels are temporary until i get my 37s in but now im not sure. the truck looks really good sitting that high

Is that all bolted down? How come the gap's are drastically different side to side?
