What is the standard billing hrs amount for basic water pump change on a 01 tahoe?

My parents tahoe is 2 hrs away at a shop, and the guy is saying its some special water pump etc and will be 5-600 when all is said and done.

I told my dad to call BS on it, cause its just a regular ol waterpump.

Anyone work in a shop that can tell me what the going # of hrs is for a waterpump?

2.5 hours billable thats from a buddy that manages a shop here in town. He would know cause he is the one who tells customers how much its gonna cost. So thats book rate.

they are about as simple as any other SBC to change out. The hardest part is getting around the fan shroud and fan...and removing the fan CAN be fun, but mine came off with no problems with 82K miles on it.

...and i hope the 2.5 hrs is COMPLETE start to finish, including flushing, refilling and bleeding the system...knowing most places the will want another hr+ labor on that...it should not take any decent tech 4 hrs to do that.

i replaced mine in about 3 hours start to finish on the side of the road. the damn fan/shaft broke off. what a pain in the ass. it was horrible. they are trying to rip you off bro. you should go change it for your parents and be a good boy. haha...

I come up with $180 for the pump, 40 for the coolant (Dex-cool), and 2.3 hrs to replace @ $70.00 hr = 161. For a grand total of $381.00 plus tax. If it needed a belt it would be an additional $55.00. This is normal customer prices at most any shop in my area. California's shop rates are higher so figure out the shop rate and you can easily figure out what a fair price would be.

The truck broke the shaft on the PS pump, so it is already at the shop. My mom is not happy, her vehicle....and its like 2.5 hrs from me. So sounds like they are getting it done.....not what i would do, but i just wanted this info so they have some grounds to speak on and not get totally screwed.

THanks everyone!

i can do these in and out the door in under 1hr at the most. with upper fan shroud removed and installed. :D

that 380ish price is about normal for my area. thay are getting her in the pocket book bad .

Yah, thats what i said, easy hour w/o coolant flush.

Hopefully they didnt' get totally hosed....

No matter whether the vehicle is a 5.3L or 4.8L Tahoe the book hours to replace the waterpump are 2.5 that includes all the extras such as time if Air Pump & Pwr Strg interfere. And the cost of the best pump I can get, NAPA Lifetime New is 234.00 for a total of $371 out the door. I DO NOT flush the coolant. BUt of course I top it off and check the specific gravity.

Hope this helps.

Also, someone commented that it should only take an hour to do... and yep, that is correct. ANY competent tech should be able to do most jobs in half, or less than half the book rate. However, when things go to hell in a handbasket and things aren't so smooth they can be forced to eat extra time if the job takes more than the book rate. Remember, the last thing you want your tech to do is charge you time and materials... Just my $.02 worth.

Is the 5-600 quote is for replacing both the waterpump and power steering pump?
If so, that seems fair to me. As long as the shop uses new parts not reman.

It doesn't matter how long the tech takes to change the part the customer is still charged full book time. This is how shops and techs make their money. If a tech can't cut book time in half he should find a new career.

Nope, just the water pump i think.

Somethign stupid like 1100 for all....ill try and find out what happened.

:eek1:1100 ? WOW. Sounds like a call to the BBB is in order. I hope they at least used some Vaseline before they rammed it in.

Yah, i looked over the bill. Total was 1300 after lubing the throttle cable (was sticking) and something else stupid.

The water pump part was $330. Shop rate was 96, which is higher than you guys guessed, but its California.

They listed an AC belt and a multi groove v belt, although im 99% positive that its just a serp setup. Those belts totaled $110.

Those 2 parts are the main things we're gonna complain about

My dad is going to have a chat with them....and if they dont' respond, ill call them.

Thanks for the help guys!

NAPA Serp Belt P/N NBH25060923 (105 Amp Alt) is $76.48 List (This is the most expensive I could find)
NAPA A/C Belt P/N NBH25040378HD is $31.48 List (This also is the most expensive I could find)

So this would total $107.96 if they charged list. My cost would have been $43.18 & $13.29 respectively. I almost always charge less than list. I have a std markup matrix that I use. And in this situation I wouldn't charge any labor for these belts since I had to take them off to do the water pump.

I am NOT defending this mechanic. I am simply giving you some information. I personally won't take advantage of someone in distress. In fact, often times I will take it very easy on people who have emergency breakdowns and are out of town. I just think its the right thing to do.

FYI - I would have put NAPA P/N PBH 4K378 ($17.13 List) and NAPA P/N 6K930 ($28.56 List) on the vehicle and I would have charged $32.07 (10% markup) for them. Hope this helps

Thanks a lot man. Those look like the exact belt prices that were listed. Is there really 2 belts on that truck? It was dark when i tried to look. Sounds like they just weren't very nice.....but didnt' necessarily do anything really wrong or out of the ordinary.
