Started some tube work... Update 8-21-11

I like those lights on the side. I'm sure they are very handy. Any night time pictures?

I don't have any pics handy but they work really well. They are my old lights off the front, just some 55w cheap lights but they fill in the entire side of the truck all the way up to the front headlights. I mostly use them when we're in the dunes since it's nice to see beside you but I guess they could be handy on the trails too.

That looks awesome. Still thinking of chopping the box up and putting the bedsides on or just leaving the back open with the tube?

I already cut the stock bed up. I have the sides of it but scrapped the rest. I'll figure it out when we're done with tube and moving stuff around out back.

OK, that should be pretty sweet when its all done. I like that look and have thought about it, but on the longbed I think it might look goofy, and I dont need the weight saving in the forseeable future.

but on the longbed I think it might look goofy,

That's something I'll have to play with as well. My bedsides are off the original short bed but when I did the shackle flip I used Ford 57" springs and put them on "backwards" so it kicked the wheelbase out a good 4-5 inches. So it's longer than a short bed but shorter than a long bed. :)
I'll figure something out when the time comes.

Bringing this back from the dead...

I whipped up a spare tire mount this weekend. It works great for my needs, simple but gets the job done. :)

I see the side-side gussets, but no up-down gussets? While wheeling some of the force on that tire is going to be side-side. But the majority will be up-down. The weight of the tire/wheel bouncing around on that support lever may twist that thing right off that horizontal tube and render all that work and those nice welds null and void.

I'm no engineer though, and have no idea how much down force could potentially be applied to that set up before it reaches its breaking point. :dunno:

I hear ya'. I'm less worried about that short tube and a little more concerned with the horizontal tube particularly the bushings. I'm going to run it as is and see how it does. Our next trip is in July to the dunes so I'll go bounce it around for a couple days and see what happens. If need be I'll change it up. As of now the only thing I might add is another bushing on the passenger side with a tube running across almost to the bushing on the driver's side to help with the up/down.

Just a little pointer from someone that's spent a few thousand hours behind a welding helmet...wrap your welds 100%. Mostly I'm seeing it on your tabs and gussets to tube. Firstly, it's a strength thing, secondly it keeps the water/rust/crud out of the joint and allows the paint to fully seal the area.

Other than that...:waytogo:

I like it.

How about a horizontal y? That would help things stiffen up.

That's kinda what I was saying above.

You mean run the beads off the end of the tabs so the welds on the top and bottom can meet up on the edges of the tabs and stuff?

Avery... just a thought here... if the gate is balanced well on opening, maybe you could add a hanging structure off it for a jerry can or something on the inside of the tire...

that way you could add some hanging structure off that bar, then you could add a brace from out at the hub area, down to the bottom of the jerrycan holder for some more up/down protection... plus ya add the jerry can function and it all would be swing open.... if that makes sense.. i could draw up what i'm talking about if it's unclear... :haha:

Without getting over complicated, you could fix it with a simple stop coming off the frame. Maybe an up side down U shaped tube coming up from the frame as a "pad" for the tire to land on. It would keep the tire from pulling down on the hanger and potentially twisting it or breaking it off.
