I have been using the Summit Protorque and they kick ass turning the engine over but they can tear a flywheel up really quick if they don't throw out all the way.I have had this happen twice-both times just after being pulled out of very deep mud. This time(yesterday)I took the starter off and emptied the solenoid of the muck and then fired it up.Got in it this morning to pull it up in the yard and start cleaning it and it didn't throw out all the way and it started to eat the ring gear a bit. These starters are great but this sucks.
Does anyone have any recommendations? Those that are seeing harsh duty(big cubes, high compression, wet conditions regularly),how are they holding up.
And BTW,shouldn't a frigging starter gear's teeth be softer than the flywheel?

I used a Powermaster XS Torque #9500 for a Chev168t. It's been submerged plenty of times. Final comp ratio was 9.49:1. I ate a couple of stock starters due to timing advance. I don't completely understand it, but when it was explained to me, it made sense. Oh well, the Powermaster worked flawlessly for the 2 years I drove the truck.:D
Oh yeah, the motor made around 560hp and 535ft/lbs of torque!:eek1:
