Hello Colorado... New Guy here been reading a while... Now its time to use the site like I need PROBLEMS!! I hate them!!
I got a problem with my starter. I have a 79 400ci k-5...The starter that was on it was a high torque starter. It went out on me and I tried putting in an OEM starter. I am on my second fly wheel and 3rd starter...It is making this nasty clanking noise...it will start to want to turn over then it goes crazy... does anyone have any ideas??

Sounds like the shimming must be a mile out. usually it just make them scream a bit and chew up the gear. Your manual will give you the proper procedure to shim the starter or a search here will throw it up. It's been that many years since I've done it that I can't remember the spec off hand.

Yeah, you need to shim one side of your starter... will cock it in a little...
I've never seen a shim that just shimmed one side. Every one i've ever bought goes from one bolt hole to the next and shims it equally away from the block and flywheel. Not sayin there aren't shims like you described i just haven't seen any.

I also need to shim mine out cause it drags a litle bit. I've never had to do it before until i installed this motor..

ever used scissors....
It's that simple... :doah:

I had a BBC 468 that chewed up starters if i didnt shim one side...
I see what you're sayin now. It's just weird to shim one side. You'd think it'd put it in a bind or something. But hey if it works it works ;)

just a thing i did i bought a milspec blazer and it had a 24 volt starter i was un knowin to this and i added a new one from autozone fried 4 before my daddy finally told me the starters in those trucks were on 24 volts

Shims should be flat and equal otherwise you're not bolting it down flat and it'll stress the mounts. You only need to move the starter in or out, not scewed.

Here is a scan from the GM manual that explains it.

im not sure how true this is cause ive never had a torque starter but i heard you have to use different bolts for them?

I am not sure about that but with the size of the starter meaning the High Torque Stater being like half the size of the OEM Im sure that be the case... That explains the WASHERS that were on the bolts LOL...Anyway I am going to go to the shop and work on it in the morning...Wish me luck fellas...

Click on the picture, when it opens, rightclick; "save as"

I was able to print them out...I was at work earlier...I had to come home and some what photo shop them cause the are a bit blur...They still are but I can read it if I strain enough!! :haha:...Thanxz again...

I guess it doesn't matter if as long as you were able to read them, but did you print the thumbnails in the post, or the full size images?

Well it says there to shim just the outboard mount which is a new one on me and engineering wise, not very sound but I stand corrected!
