Hello Members, My starter looks like it’s on borrowed time. Sometimes all I get is clicking at the starter then after several tries it will start. Has a new battery. Should replace or repair solenoid or change out starter. Any recommendations on new ones or replacement. It has the original 5.7 350 engine. Thanks for any assistance.

Keep in mind that the stock solenoid wiring is marginal at best and after a few decades the ignition switch and wiring aren't what they once were. Round trip, that little pink wire is dozens of feet long and once the solenoid gets hot there just isn't enough current flowing for the solenoid to jam the contact in well. Search for threads on a remote-mount solenoid (or Ford solenoid) because sometimes just giving adequate voltage to the solenoid is enough to make even the cheapest reman starter work well.

I second the mini starter.
I got a new not remanufactured and I love it.
It's smooth, starts easy every time and it was cheap at $75

Gotta say, now that they are very commonly available, and I'm getting older, even as little as I have to mess with it, I appreciate the mini starter.

Mainly just the weight. I remember before, trying to hold the factory starter up near the block with one hand, and trying to get the wires connected with my other hand. Doable, had to do so dozens of times (engine swaps, failures, etc), but these mini starters are night and day. So much lighter, wire access is easier, and they draw a lot less while cranking every bit as powerfully as the older, massive factory starters.

Remote solenoid may indeed solve the problem, but I'd have to weigh the time, cost and effort vs. the results...mini starter seems pretty painless, since AFAIK nothing needs changed except the starter itself.

Be thankful you haven't had to install a Delco direct drive 6.2 starter..
Helps if you can bench press 30+ lbs with one hand lying on your back and hold it still long enough to get a bolt started..
I put a gear reduction starter on my 6.2 after the direct drive one started acting up,off a later 6.5 diesel..those aren't as heavy, but still weigh more than one for a gas engine..

I had a DB starter but it failed after 10 months. 12 month warranty. They replace it but it's Chinese/amazon junk, good enough to sell the truck

I’m going to check out things this weekend along with the quadzillion other stuff I need to do. I might just have someone else do the job because my right rotor cuff needs surgery. Injured it about two months ago. What next

Ditch the huge starter and get mini torq from a vortec 5.7 truck. Way easier to install and better performance.

Are these a direct bolt in swap for our square body 5.7L (350) engines, even into the '80's? I'm asking because I have an '88 K5 and wanted to know for future reference if needed. Thanks!

Hello
I Just replaced my original starter with a DB Electrical SDR0019-L
on my 1989 Jimmy 350 TBI
Some times it starts in a millisecond some times it takes a few seconds to fire up? It sounds quiet and smooth while turning over just doesn't fire up immediately every time
I replaced the old starter because it would occasionally make a grinding noise when trying to start. Thanks for any assistance.

How's your timing, pull your plugs look at em they might tell a story....

timing set at 0 by dyno shop two weeks ago
New plugs R43ts 2 months ago new cables 2 gauge
what am i looking for on the plugs
Thanks

Why the hell is it at zero, look up specs it's supposed to be higher than that...

The plugs don't lie they can tell you running rich, lean, oil deposits

Google how to read sparkplug it will give color pics
