Well i just bought my first k5 . It is a 1977 and its pretty ruff to say the least
I paid $600 and i lack a few things haha
#1 a motor
#2 exhaust
#3 lift
My full intention is 100% mud truck. Mudd bogging .
Most of my question are how do i get it up higher. I have read about the shackel flip but dont fully understand it.

Here are a few pix
lol after i post 15 times

Welcome aboard!

To get the truck in the air, a suspension lift is what is needed. That can be, springs, blocks, or a shackle flip (for the rear). The flip is changing the stock setup to a compression style.

What size tire do you plan to run?

I'm assuming you've read the tech article/product review about ORD's kit.

first off, welcome to the forums. With what you have in front of you, i strongly advise you go ahead and pay the $25 registration fee, its worth its weight in gold. and youre definatly gonna need it.

that being said, how big are you planning on going? that tends to be a required bit of info for what all might be involved. also what size tires are you looking at running?

generally speaking 4in of lift can be done without issue. all you need is the front springs and as you pointed out, the shackle flip. the shackle is the "hinge" that connects the leaf spring to the frame. youll note that the spring is above the mount from the factory. the shackle flip puts the leaf spring below the mount. which adds about 4in of lift in the rear.

more than 4in of lift would involve drop spindles, longer brake lines, maybe cross over steering. and more that im forgetting.

larger tires can also be fit by trimming the fenders, body lifts. guys on here also have built "truggies" where they narrow the front and rear for more articulation.

i suggest giving the search function a try. there is tons of info on the forums. should answer most of your questions.

I'm pretty set on running a 35 or 38 tire. Are the ord schakle flips the way to go ? Can I get that out of the 4" lift and maybe a 3" body lift. I heard to stay away from a body lift.

You can 35's on with a 4" lift. You might need to do some minor trimming of the fenders though. 38's will need trimming with a 4".

I'm running the Ord shackle filp on my K5 without any problems. Diy4x4 (http://www.diy4x.com/main.htm) also makes a quality kit.

Body lifts get mixed reviews around here. I've got a 3" on my K5 (was on it when I bought it). I plan to take it off and put a 1" in it's place. They aren't bad...but they're not the best way to get more tire clearance.
