did a pan drop and filter change on the 88 'burb today. things felt fine on the test drive afterwards. after sitting for a few hours and driving home from my buddy's farm i noticed the transmission staying in gears too long followed by a rough shift. trans is shifting into second around 18 at light throttle instead of about 12mph, 2-3 shift is similar.

any ideas?

'88 should be a 700r4, so no vacuum line modulator unit, unless he swapped it with something else..

at about what speed does it shift into 3rd from 2nd gear?

as i mentioned in another thread, my second trans that just recently died, would shift late, slam into gears, from 2nd to 3rd it would ONLY shift at about 45mph, if you let off the gas before it shifted, it would freewheel, like if you pushed in a clutch... and then i'd be lucky to get into overdrive at all most of the time.

it just died a few weekd ago, stopped at a stoplight, it started out in second gear, as i started rolling it slammed into first and would not come out ever again.

Its possible you did more damage than good by changing the fluid and filter. what I have been told is that is you go way too long without changing this stuff, it makes where the only thing keeping your tranny going is all the clutch particles in your fluid, so when you change your fluid finally, it shortens the life of your tranny drastically.

yesterday my trans was hitting 3rd gear around 40mph (3.42 gears, 31 inch tires) but once i got on the highway it ran fine. shirting from park to drive was much faster than usual. today i drove to work and everything acted normal, shift point were back to where normal, park-drive shift felt like it always did. i'll check the trans fluid level when i get home from work. is it possible i had an air bubble that worked it's way out? or a slight overfill?

as far as doing more harm than good, here is some background on my maintainence on the trans. i had changed fluid when i bought the truck a little over two years ago. i had pumped out the valve body, dropped the pan, cleaned the magnet, no brass shaving, just normal particles on the magnet. i had installed a fram filter (only thing i could find on short notice) and Amsoil ATF. i couldn't see anywhere to drain the torque converter, so the fluid in the TC stayed in. before my first fluid change on the truck 2 years ago, the fluid was dark red, was not burnt, but was dark enough i felt i needed to change fluid right away.

this last change the fluid was red with plent of life left in it, still was not at all burnt. i did not pump out the valve body this time, just dropped the pan, cleaned the magnet, no brass shavings, installed a Wix filter and filled with Amsoil ATF.

i'll report back about my drive home from work tonight.

i dunno, my fluid still looked good too when i dropped it for a change, to try to help cure the shifting problem. I drove it that way for about two months though, kind of annoying, but it's all i had to drive at the time.

the original trans would act up every now and then, some days it would shift fine, others it didn't want to, until it finally just quit alltogether.

if it's fine now, good, but be aware, and you may want to plan on putting some cash aside for that emergency rebuild in the not too distant future.

ran fine on the drive home. fluid was full, might be just a hair over the hatch marks.
