steel questions

what kind of steel should i buy to make shackles out of? im not sure that flat stock comes in different grades...dont know enough about it. going to use 3/8 inch by 1 1/2-1 3/4 inch to make my front shackles. what should i look for? will i have to buy a big plate, or can buy in that width?

ive never priced steel, what should i expect?

I used some 3/8" x 2" steel that I bought locally. I think it's just mild steel, nothing special. I'm not sure of current prices.

I don't know about price exactly right now, but 3/8x2" is what I used. Cold rolled is slightly stronger than hot rolled. The price reflects the difference too.
