So I decided now was a good time to install the lift steering arm I have for my truck, I would love to be able to turn left...

I took the nuts off and wailed on the arm, that didn't work, so I threaded the nuts back on 3 or 4 threads and wailed on them, all that did was mess up the stud threads :doah: . Tried heating up the arm around the studs while jacking up on the arm with my floorjack and the LF wheel off the ground.. nothing.

WTF, over?

hit the arm with a bfh.

Over and over and over and over and over and over again.

It will come loose. then when you notice a cone washer come loose try and rotate them with a pair of plyers and tehy will come right out

Hit down and side to side...never up as it just seats the washers harder. The last three I've done all took me less than 15 minutes.

I've done work on stuff with cone washers before... I forgot.. using a socket just big enough to rest over the stud onto the washer and a couple good wacks can free them. I just re-cut threads and installed new nuts and lock washers for now. Too sore from tearing all the interior out to do anymore...

We fought to remove several of those steering arms at the junkyard--they can be very togh to get off without damage.....once my co-worker decided to WELD the nuts to the studs, then an impact gun spun the studs right out!..and putting it vack on was the customers problem!..most suspention shops here just use grade 8 bolts in place of the studs, with the coned washers,I did that on my 74 GMC and never had any troubles...

All it takes is a 10# sledge hammer and about 5 wacks and it's done. Of course since it is still in the truck that will be a little hard to do.

if you've already messed up the threads just weld the nuts to the studs and unscrew em. brings the cones right out with it:waytogo:

BFH didn't work for me. I just removed the studs with a cam driven stud remover. 10min job. This was a while ago but I'm pretty sure I bought new studs and conical washers from ORD.

I had the same question about 4 years ago. I put some PB blaster in there overnight and smashed the dog shlt out if with a 10 pounder. They did finally pop out.

We used an 18 lb sledge hammer on the real stubborn ones,if that failed it was usually because we could not get a good enough swing at it without mashing the fender!--or we were too tired !..then we'd resort to welding the nuts onto the studs, and pray they came out of the knuckle and not bust off in it!..
