steering arm removal.

The ones I removed, I found the easiest way was to hit down on the "U" part of the arm with a BFH. It took a few hits and then popped off. :D

Rick

me too

no you dont reuse the cones....

I didn't have access to a torch, so I took the next best thing, the sawsall. I cut through the steering arm, cutting into each of the cones to releave the pressure. After the 3 cuts, just bang away with the hammer. Worked okay, but took a long time.

i used a reciprocating saw for the first time yesterday to cut some aftermarket ubolts down. that really sucked. don't know if maybe i was using a crappy one w/ crappy blades (borrowed) - but man was i sore after about 2 min. of that. my goal is to not use one as much as possible from now on. :) i'm just going to get a big hammer and the cone pulling tool. ;)

hey i got one off by smacking it with a hammer and tons of elbow grease.... got it done in 10 min

but i got one on this dana 44, lets just say, its so rusted, im looking for two flattops, haha not just one

sawzalls are great, you probably had a crappy blade, its should take more than a few seconds to chop off a u bolt. From what I remember when I did mine, which was way long ago when I did my first 4" lift in highschool. I took a flathead screwdriver and wedged it in the cone slot to open it up a bit then popped the arm off with a BFH.

I think I went though 3 cheap blades on one cut before I bucked up for good blades. Makes a world of difference.

Your arms will feel like jello though if you're not used to it.

5 pages on pulling the steering arm...Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. 10 minutes and mine was off (no heat required). Mine was the stock arm that had been on there for 30 years un touched.

Soak the studs/nuts with wd40 or pb blaster for a couple of days. Take a hammer and strike DOWN on the "u" part of the arm (towords the front of the truck). Keep hitting down and the rearmost cone will start to pop up. hit it until the cone is up high enough to grab with some regular pliers and just un screw it out. Go back to hitting the arm in the same place and the middle cone will pop up. Repeat until the front cone is out.

Hitting "UP" on the arm only forces the arm into the cones and the cones drag on the studs. I'm sure one could get the arm off that way, but you'd be one tired puppy swinging a BFH for a long time.

I was not looking forward to doing mine, knowing how long it had been on there. One of my buddies was helping me with the lift and showed me. I kidd you not, 10 minutes was all it took.

and interestingly, you decided to say exactly what everyone else said on the last five pages. :wink1:

had the previous advice been taken and used the arm would have been off last weekend!!!:haha: :haha:

No big deal, just trying to help. I figured I'd add my experience if you missed what was on the first page. Before I had my K5 I watched a nieghbor beat on that arm all weekend long on a 91 K5. That was back when I lived in Detroit and that truck saw every ounce of salt they threw on the roads back there...I didn't know they what they were working on in the closed garage, but I could sure hear them pounding away like a trio of blacksmiths. It was actually pretty funny to watch. One guy with a torch, another with a hammer and the third guy shouting instructions with a beer in his hand...If only I knew then what I know now. Instead I grabbed a beer and watched the fun unfold..

ok. so if we're going to get into a game of ripping on eachother, just let me know - i'm fine with that. i can probably rip you a new a$$ hole just from the two posts of yours in this thread (it's the only thing i know about you right now, but i could potentially research other stupid things you have said in previous posts - but i just don't care about you that much.)

anyway, to give you some perspective, my project truck is an hours drive away from me. i didn't research pulling a steering arm before attempting it last weekend, thus, when i didn't get it off, i decided to wait till the next time i go down there. That way i could research it this week and be educated next week. As a result I don't even have a visual to look at - so when people start talking about stuff i've never heard of, or seen before, it gets pretty d@mn difficult to visualize.

i guess i'll leave it there. that'll leave some extra material for if you actually want to start this little game. :wink1:

People are just trying to help you. Dont get butt hurt when you people say something in regards to your remark about how many times the same thing has been said over and over again. Nor is it a game or a forum for ripping on people, usually people complain when they dont get any responses, not when there are too many.

I had something typed up to respond but I think I'll take the high road. Sorry my poor attempt as sarcasm and use of smileys offended you....It wasn't meant too. Hope you get the arm off next weekend.....GOOD LUCK!

the way i got my steering arm off was weld the nut to the cone, and just unscrew teh cone out. it worked great:D

relax - i wasn't pissed or butt hurt. in fact, i was laughing the whole time reading it. apparently, i did misunderstand the point of the original post, however, i'm not real keen on people taking cuts at my desire to learn. ;)

If ya want to see how to pop one off stop by my Moms store and I'll show ya.
I'll be back in town tomorrow.
Oh.. be sure ya ask for Ron. ;)

hey whoever is trying to get their #$%##!@ steering arm off, i took mine off by using an air hammer, (about $20 from harbor freight with bits, if you have a compressor), you just put a pointed bit right on the cones or next to them and have at it...the vibration loosens them real good, a few whacks with a hammer and it should come right off
