The time has come to upgrade my steering, I learned in Moab that push/pull steering and a front locker like to fight. Also thanks to everyone who followed me for their patience as I backed and filled, unlocked/locked hubs and tried different combinations of 2hi, 4hi and 4lo just to turn! And my power steering pump was unhappy, it boiled over on Friday.
So first on the list is a crossover kit for ORD, which was an easy choice, but where I'm stumped is the many choices of 2wd steering boxes out there. There are different ratio's, quick boxes, etc. I am doing crossover and the box first, and going to wait to see if I need hydro assist later.
My truck still has the factory original box on it, with 210k miles!
Lets hear your opinions on what ya'll have used, what works and what's junk!

Anything but PSC. I’ve run two on my k5 with issues and went through 4 on an old dodge before I gave in and just got an o’reilly’s. They warrantied every one but they would argue for a bit at first.

You would think that a 100% brand new box from PSC would have zero issues. Good to know.

I had my box rebuilt and it leaks like crazy...ill be going redhead when i can afford it. I love hydro assist.

There has been several members who have had issues with the Psc boxes and pumps recently, I have a used one on my truck with no issues.

Im looking to upgrade my steering gear as well. I know PSC have a larger piston in it. Do any of the other steering gears have upgrades done to them? My other option which wasn't listed in on the OP's poll is to send the stock gearbox to west texas offroad and have them rebuild (if needed) and ports added for hydro assist.

Howe

PSC and redhead both have established a reputation of poor QC

Im a believer in a1 cardone. On my blazer its been many many years now. 91 got one immediately. Faithful service there.
Every truck to need one through the shop got an oriellys reman. Probably over 200 boxes and about 20 were squares.
I have no reason to not buy another.

I vote HOWE if you are going aftermarket stuff. I had their full hydro system for a couple of years. Pulled the ram. Added an O'Reilly box, ported the caps and put a no name ram on it. The p-pump, cooler, reservoir and filter from HOWE are still on it. Other than breaking a shaft last weekend in the box, it has been on There for years.

But I am really easy on my truck.

I love that pic of you airing the Jimmy out!!

Howe seems like some race car stuff, especially the prices! Almost too good for an old pickup

Added them to the poll.

got a almost new AGR box from a member here a few years ago . it developed a leak . i called for a seal kit and they said NOPE must send in box for rebuild and its $$$ to do this . . .

i told them to go pound salt and found it was 1 outer seal and was the same as a std seal kit . otherwise i would have just got a reman box for less money . the way they treated me on the phone i will not buy there so called special crap ever .

I would think a close ratio box, like 12.7:1 would be nice. Why not want to cut a turn out of the wheel to be fully locked? I have no direct experience, so I cannot recommend an brands.

I believe a close ratio box has less leverage over the tires. Which I suppose wouldn't matter if you had hydro assist.

It is amazing to see that people are having issues with PSC boxes. Their steering boxes are brand new cases with all new heavy duty internal parts. You would think they are made of gold, and could stand up to anything.
