Ok, so i am about to embark on rebuilding a steering gear box and i need to install a 2WD sector shaft for my crossover steering and i need to know does the 2WD shaft have to be from a truck or is a car sector shaft the same?

I'm not positive on this, but I think I remember reading somewhere that a car is slightly different.

Post up if you find a source for new ones. I've been trying with the help of MRK5 to get new but it looks like it's got to be used.

just a simple question but why go threw all the hassle of shaft swap when you can just remove the bolts and hoses and swap the complet box? and all of this after you found the box.

What Hassle  I guarantee that swaping sector shafts out is quicker and easier to do. Pull pitman, unbolt top cap, remove, replace in same manner, done. No hoses, no rag jont to deal with, and you know the condition of your box vs. not knowing the condition of the JY box. I pulled the one from the JY with the box still on the frame and stuck it in mine w/o removing it either.

Ok, so now back to the original question. What does the 2WD shaft need to come from, truck or car or are they the same?

did you hit up Eric M from the norcal board to see if he still had the one from that suburban?

I bolted mine on last night. I swapped out the box so that I could get different fittings, since mine where the oring style.

Not true. If you don't set the drag to the correct amount of torque after swapping out the sector shaft, your gear mesh will be all out of whack. It can cause binding issues. Bad juju. Ask me how I know. :eek1: :doah:

To answer your original question. It needs to be from a 2WD truck.

yep chevy K series vehicles. can be either truck or blazer in the 2wd version.
You will need to pull the steering shaft to set up the new shaft.

so wouldnt that mean a "c" series vehicle?

:D

C/K series only

that means no S-series, or any cars

they are reversed, wrong side of the frame rail

and no G series either(vans)

good luck

Not to hijack, but while we are on the subject of tearing a steering gear box apart, does anybody know where to find a good tech article on rebuilding a Saginaw stearing box? Not just an article on swaping the sector shaft only, and not just a link to a post describing how to rebuild a box...I am talking a full tech article write-up with pictures and everything. I have spent about 2-hours searching the Internet for one, and I cannot find one any place.

Just look in a Chiltons or motors manual, that is where i got all my info when i rebuilt my steering box. The manual gives you all the required torque values and adjustment specs.

Just look in a Chiltons

I have a Chiltons, and there is only two sentences on steering boxes:

Chapter 4) 4.23 "remove gear box"
Chapter 4) 4.24 "to install gear box/reverse procedure found in 4.23".

umm, "C" is 2wd

"k" is 4x4...........(and for 88-91, "R" is 2wd, "V" is 4x4)

umm

yes C is 2wd and G also(from factory, although a few 4x4 G series exist, but rare)

everyone knows this

what, did i say that C was not 2wd ?
id like you to show me where i did,

i was just saying what boxes will bolt on the right side of the frame rail, the outer side

C/K/R/V all do

also 87 was R/V series,

this started in 87

my 87 c-10 was an R10

i think you misunderstood what i posted up there

i was not saying that C is 4x4
or that it wasnt

i was just talking about steering box design

that S-series and G-series wont/cant work on a C/K(R/V) series

if you want to get technical then we could talk about the 70-72 2wd K-5's(all 69 were 4x4)

the designation letter wasnt always accurate with GM

K wasnt always 4x4, for example

but people can believe/think what they want, i try my best to help ppl, but you can only try so much, then its just time to give up, my problem is that i dont give up easily enough when i know that i am right and know what im talking about

good luck
