Hey everyone,
i need some help with someone who may have worked on the insides of a steering column. I have a 1991 chevy k5 blazer and was trying to fix the intermittent wipers.

After removing the tilt arm and turn signal lever

I pulled the cover off and this piece fell out and i have no idea how to put it back.

Anyone know what this is and how it goes back in?

Been looking at these but they aren’t making sense

If I remember correctly, that fits in a groove in that plastic cover. Seems like I had to put a dab of grease on the cover to hold it in place.
so it’s part of the busted up cover… ahh probably makes sense. I’ll check it out tomorrow. Does anyone know if anyone offers replacement cover? My initial thought is, if the part doesn’t perform any function i won’t care but if it does then i’ll be on the hunt for a new cover.

thanks again for your reply

This is an intermediate piece between the high beam lever and the j shaped steel rod in your pictures. It take a little patience and luck to get it back in place and the cover on.

What is the issue with your delay wipers? The delay part is controlled by a module under the steering column behind the lower dash.

thanks wes…
based on what nvrenuf said i can see what they were referencing and i “think” I have it staged

it looks like the wire was cut and i don’t see the original wire, just what was left still attached the the turn signal lever. So no way for me to trace the old.

Now I am trying to locate the module to see if old wire might be attached. Does anyone see the module in this image

That’s the way that little part goes in the cover. :thumb:

There’s no delay module in your pic. It would be mounted on the underside of the column just inside of the removable dash plate, it would be black, about 2.5”x4” with silver heat sink fins - it’s definitely not there. My understanding is no one reproduces the module but it is installed inline in the wiper harness so if one is bad you can remove it and plug the harness together bypassing it to have off/low/high (I did this).

just to confirm it’s not this thing

I can see the colored wires that connect to turn signal switch from that module

I just don’t see where this is suppose to plug into if that is it

thanks again for everyone’s feedback and suggestions.

The wires in this pic, are the wiper switch wires. The t/s stalk moves this switch when you rotate it. The intermittent module will be under the edge of the dash.

Does your truck still have a cruise control unit ?

For reference the turn signal "switch" has nothing to do with the wipers. The wiper part is called multi-function switch. Two different switches.
Yes that silver and black box is the wiper delay module.

On the Turn Signal Stalk the wire is for the Cruise Control. There will be a receiving Female wiring plug up under the dash area that is designed to accept the male skinny four wire plug.

The Stalk will go into the Wiper Switch has the approximately 7 Wires... from the wiper switch going into the relay module out of the relay module I cant remember there are going the wiper motor. The BROWN wire controls the interment relay module.

If you are in this deep , I would replace the turn signal wiring as well .

All three wiring leads will need to route through the column together and if you still have the plastic sleeve this will need to be used to keep the wires from being crimped or damaged.

There is a picture above that shows the intermittent relay. New ones are available as I purchased one from Work Horse Parts

They work well as I just replaced mine.

thanks for that useful info.
For anyone troubleshooting this i have a couple more useful photos

Wes thanks for explaining that the wire attached to the new turn signal is for cruise control. I don’t use it and i have changed so much it’s just not worth it
IMG_1440.jpeg

Just like 85K5Blazer mentioned about the brown wire
IMG_1437.jpeg

this shows the module but no description of what each wire does

Hope this helps someone else.

Am I going blind or crazy? I swear that module is not in the pic in post #5 but it's clearly in the pic in post #8. I know my glasses need to be updated but damn.... :doah: :screwy:

bad pic originally. i wanted to show the steering column. not ur fault for not being able to see it.

Now i “attempted” to put it together but silly brights don’t work now so I obviously installed it wrong so gotta figure that out.

@Wes Harden do you happen to know how that piece is suppose to in and may help me understand how?

It looks to me like its backwards. Been a number of years since I have been a column of this vintage. But the raised knob goes toward the turn signal stock part of actuator, and the c shaped portion goes against the hooked part of rod to high beam switch
