Steering column issues

I just bought a 75 GMC Jimmy, and the steering column is having problems. The lower shaft is tight with the steering box, and it seems the movement is inside the tilt mechanism area. I bought a kit off ebay for rebuilding this area, but haven't received it yet. I have already pulled the steering wheel off, and the plastic piece behind with the 6 or 8 wires attached. Then I removed the 3 screws, but now what? do I remove the tilt stalk? and how would I do that? I have pulled out the top bearing, which was toast, but how do I get to the lower one? Pictures would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

ok, tilt stalk is off, but I can't get the lock housing off. it moves about a half inch, but the housing won't come off. Is there some lever or screw or something? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

If you posts some pics it might jog my memory. I have fixed a lot of these over the years just don't remember the exact steps. Min all have locktite now...no more messing around.

I don't see what would be holding you up. Did you try tilting it while pulling the lock housing off off? Once you remove the lock cylinder and 3 screws the hosing should come off. I am used to a slightly different column( with the delay and stuff in it). Once the lock housing is off on those you need to actuate the tilt to remove the tilt mechanism. Might be where you are at with this one but I think it should just pull off.

I tried, and the 3 screws are out, but still won't move more than about 3/8 inch. I've tried wiggling the whole sleeve, but the ignition switch moves when I try to pull it off. what position should the ignition switch be in? I've even tried it in different positions, but still no help. also, what delay are you talking about? the turn signal ring? or the wiper delay?
Thanks

I was talking about the later columns with tilt/cruise/delay wipers on them. They have that bulge on the left side if you will. Very similar to yours but I think they come apart slightly different. I think you are still attached to the tilt mechanism somehow. Now that I think about it that will not come out until you pull the pins.

I tried google quickly and came up with some videos and such. I am trying to locate one with the same vintage. If you try google it's a Saginaw tilt column. GM might work but Saginaw returned more technical stuff.

pull the pins, you mean the ones you need a slide hammer for? the outer housing won't come out far enough for those to come out. it still covers those by about a 1/4 inch. Thanks

i have the same problem or kinda the same problem with mine. the tilt part of the column is busted. i don't think i will go thru the headache of fixing it this way might be cheaper just to replace the whole column part and be done with it. but that is just my opinion. will keep an eye out on this to see how you make out.
