Steering lock woes!

That is badass. I'm sure that's not a common sight over there, good for you!

I have a 1983 CK 1500 with an extended cab. The owner has spent a fortune on and apparently it kicks out about 450h and over 500lbs of torque! She's an Auto fitted with an Edlebrock Slap-shift.

I think as the previous owner removed the original column shift to instal the slap=shift, i think this is where the damage has been done, so at some stage, i want to re-install the column shift (its so wide on the roads over here, i've got enough to worry about without the slap-shifter!! lol!)

Looking at how many things aren't stock, I can believe the owner spent a fortune. You should definitely share pictures of the extended cab region. Since GM never made that combination, each one out there is unique and special.

It looks like the steering column isn't filling the hole in the dash. It should be, so something is non-standard there.

Are you keeping all the decals? I'm seeing a transformers theme, which begs the question of just what it transforms into. :dunno:

:haha:

I'd probably strip all the stickers off of it...but I'm a real sticker/decal hater.

I'd also love some good detail pics of the extended cab. One area I'm always most interested in is the small side window area. Some conversions get it looking decent, but it is difficult to find a window there that has a factory look to it.

It does look like someone may have swapped a different column in your truck.

Sorry chaps!!! Very rude of me, i didn't notice there had been a reply!

Ok so its been a bit poor this side of the pond as i got a couple of guys out to look over it, both diagnosed incorrectly and i actually got her up and running myself by sliding that ignition rod all the way back.

The bad bit is, in the mean time, the gearbox and breaks have deteriorated and as i've just bought a new house, i have to get a low loader to move her.

It also looks like theres damp got into the cab and she's pretty mildew'y now which is another reason for moving her to the new house.

I think some of the issues i face now are getting rid of the slap shifter and putting a straight forward box in her, plus making her more drivable! I need to upload some pictures of the suspension and engine as dynamically she's sound! I also agree with getting rid of the Decals too!

Please keep your thoughts coming guys!!!

Happy New Year!

Is it a "C" (2WD) or a "K" (4WD) model. There will be a weight difference. Also, what is your wheelbase? Is this a cab-and-a-half with a 6' bed or something shorter? It doesn't look like a standard 8' bed. Either way, it's not an option that GM offered, so your weight numbers will be unique, to say the least. :haha:
Total weight rating for a 1/2-ton truck of this era is about 6000 American pounds (not to be confused with British pounds flagwaver), so you shouldn't be heavier than that. I'd be guessing you're somewhere between 4500-5000 lbs empty.

Taking an example, stock curb weight for a 1986 K10 with a long fleetside bed is 4668 pounds (excellent resource here, I'm citing page 17). Your 1983 will not be significantly different than a 1986, but your mods will have an effect.

the designation between 10 and 1500 models is just the badging. 1500 models are badged as GMC trucks. The chevy equivalents are tagged as 10 models. They are identical aside from the badging. So numbers/parts applicable to one will also fit the other. My 1/2-ton GMC truck is a 1983 K1500. Might just be your truck's twin, if you have a transfer case. :)

Edit - I see locking hubs hanging out of your front wheels. So you do have a K1500 model (not a C1500). My long lost twin. Kinda. :rotfl:

You guys really are so helpful, i can't thank you enough!! The sad thing is, i love learning about the differences between the models and what all the significance between the "c" & "k" models is!

Anyways, the reason i asked is so i can get a cost to mover her - now, i've gotta go measure her later so i'll come back with some measurements then, however i won't take any pics of the interior just jet as it wouldn't do her any justice - i'll wait till the old girl is back here! :)

Your threads are now showing in your posts, so i can see them that way. Its pretty early here so i'll look forward to having a look tonight! :)

Ok. I have yet to get very far into serious truck mods, so my threads are mostly full of pictures of how I use the trucks. Road trips. Adventures. That sort of thing. I'm slowly starting to get my M1009 pieced back together. So technical pictures are slowly tricking into that thread.

You get this thing home yet? :pimp:

hahaha! Unfortunatly, i wish the kin-ship i share with you guys was the same over here. Trying to get stuff done quickly in the UK is a headache!

The companies over here are not set up to handle trucks like this and i get a lot of head-scratching and big intakes of breath (usually followed by ridiculous quotes!!)

I'll update you soon :D

By the way, just so you realise how busy i was last year......

I died in March, (yes you read that right....DIED), bought a new house in hospital and moved in in August, had the tumour removed in September, and bought an Audi S5 in November!!

.....kind hoping this year is less eventful! lol

hahaha! Well about a month before i got taken into hospital, i'd been looking for a new place and as it was a brand new development, i slapped down a deposit then had to have the documents fedexed to me inside and sent back and forth, plus just email all my choices to the developers. There was no chain involved so luckily it was pretty simple.

I'd been complaining to my local GP for about 5-6 years of these symptoms i was getting and they did jack, then i started getting a couple of weird issues which culminated with me getting taken into hospital with heart failure, renal failure, pneumonia and chest failure where i died and they brought me back. They did some investigation as i'm generally pretty healthy as in i played rugby most of my life and trained twice a day so they couldn't understand it, then eventually they found the tumour!

Because it had been left so long, it had grown to 14cm x 14cm which is pretty big and i now have a mahusive scar where they took the mofo out! :) So yeah, spent about 6 months in hospital last year which didn't help with buying and transporting the truck etc!

I see. Congrats on overcoming.

So this year should be much more fun for you.

errrrr..........if its ok with you, i'd like a little bit LESS excitement please! hahaha!

The other thing i was gonna say to you guys is that the engine serious looks like its had some decent work done to it and runs sweet, but the max i can get out of her is about 70-75mph!! Is that because he's put that slap-shifter in there do you think??
