Steering lock woes!

errrrr..........if its ok with you, i'd like a little bit LESS excitement please! hahaha!

The other thing i was gonna say to you guys is that the engine serious looks like its had some decent work done to it and runs sweet, but the max i can get out of her is about 70-75mph!! Is that because he's put that slap-shifter in there do you think??

What tranny/gearing combination do you have? Do you have a tachometer in that fancy custom cab? What is your cruising RPM range at 70MPH?

70?! They wot let her on the road at the minute! :) I have to get some stuff sorted before she's drivable but when i was driving her she was raving high. I do have a Tacho as it happens and i'll get this info back to you as well

As for the tranny, it was on the original listing so i'll have a look and see if i can find it. She's gonna cost a few $thousand to get her drivable over here i think!! :S

Just look at the shape of the tranny pan next time you see the truck.

How many gears do you have? You are most likely dealing with a TH400 (3-speed) or a TH700R4 (4-speed) in this year of truck.

Defiantly think she only has 3 speeds - and 2 of those are dog slow! :) She's quick off the mark but the prehistoric brakes mean i have to put it down in advance in the diary if i wanna stop!!!

Ok, I have the original description here:

"I am selling this 1983 Chevy custom ext cab truck. This has a custom built 350 that is Dyno'd to 416 H.P. With over 500 lbs. of torque. This truck was definitely built built for torque! The motor has approximately 25,000 miles on this kit and drives great and even better off-road. If you know what 416 hp means, well this truck has goodies inside and out of the motor. The tires are just dirty from Arizona Desert Hills here in Lake Havasu City, Az. & are in great condition. They are Toyo Tires & they are a top of the line brand! It has a (8in) suspension lift. This truck is ready to compete out there in any mud bog comp, especially with the 416 horses! It has a has slap shifter(Edlebrock) on the floor. The truck has a turbo 350 tranny that "shifts fine" The inside of cab is nothing special. no tears or major stains. seats actually nice for the year! custom ext cab model. Very rare"

So looks like a 350 Tranny?! is that why she's so slow top end?

I have another idea as well i wanna run past you guys..............Shes proving too long and wide for the roads over here and i'm not getting any benefit from the ext cab, plus i like the look of the older Single headlight trucks. Can i get something like a '78 short bed and swap the suspension and engine, plus hopefully get a regular auto or would it eat up the auto?

All help gratefully received!

Yes, you should be able to fairly easily swap whatever you want over to anything in the 1973-1987(or 91) year range. Outside that range is still doable, but not bolt-in like the square-bodies are. I think your biggest variable here is what sort of engine this truck is using (clearly not stock). Is this a carburetor rig? EFI? Something newer? The physical mounting of hardware should present no problems, but you may wind up doing some electrical wiring if you take a newer engine to an older truck.

But parting out a super rare custom extended-cab seems like a crummy way to build a truck. Why not sell that rig as it is (while it's still worth a bunch of money), and just buy your '78 short bed? It will come with suspension and engine already, so I think you'd be ahead of the game rebuilding that vs. tearing apart the nice truck. Not sure how easy it is to sell American rigs over there, but that rig would attract a bunch of buyers here. The lack of square-bodied long cabs is distinctly felt now that single cabs are nearly extinct over here.

Hmmmm......that defiantly gives me something to think about! The Engine has an Edlebrock carb set up on it i think, and the air intake looks pretty impressive.

I'll give your idea some thought.

Hey Campfire! Sorry, been absolutely manic the last two months!

I finally managed to get her started and running but thing the carbs need re-tuning as she keeps cutting out. Ive moved house so need to get someone to mover her and tune her up so i can get some odds and sods done.

Its gonna take a fair bit of work as the cabin needs gutting really (Damp has got in through leaks) and the body is tatty.

Thanks for thinking about me still and i'll update you soon!
