Steering Shaft - XJ or Borgeson ???

I've had a rag joint fail at the box,and it was not a fun ride, when the steering heel spun around about 50 times and NO response at the wheels!..I was making a U-turn at about 15 mph when it failed..I dont like rubber rag joints!..as for rthe "HELP" section ones, they are pretty cheesy,a hunk of an old tire is probably stronger than what they made them from,ot looks like the rubber/fabric cord that V-belts are made from or conveyor belting...I found a decent used one at a junkyard ( steering shaft) but I had to go back a few times--I had the splined steering colum not the "D" shaped shaft--plus the flex coupling at the colum end was sloppy too,so I kept looking till I found a tight one and used that shaft..I was tempted to try a Jeep one ,I had read here that they were an easy swap, but I was up against another snowfall and didn;t want to waste time trying to modify one--..

I used a steering shaft from a 70's Dodge power wagon 4x4 we had at the junkyard to replace one in a 78 GMC and it was u-joints on both ends, and was a tad longer,we shortened it the same way you do on the Jeep ones--it surprised us that it bolted right on !...

Time for another shaft in this case. When you get another shaft the ONLY thing you should do to it in order to use it in our rigs is to compress the shaft so that it fits on our rigs. I simply held the shaft and then hit it on the ground until it started to move then carefully pushed it to the required length. You SHOULD NOT take it apart for any reason, some you just have to drill out the plastic "lock pins" then compress the shaft.

You really should read this thread and tell me what you think:

Just the first part. I'm not trying to blame anyone for anything. Just learning.

I think I might try my XJ to see how it rides. I'll put some grease on it, as mentioned in the thread I linked. If I'm not happy, then I'll go with a new one.

If the plastic pieces are gone I would not run it, it will have alot of slop in it.
