Has anyone installed theres above the a/c controls? Is there room to put it there.
Its so hard to mess with it while driving because of the steering wheel.
 
Never put it there but i DID swtich the a/c controls and the radio around. I sold the truck so no pics but i just made a plate for each hole and had to cut a little in the a/c hole for the stereo to fit. It worked great and the stereo wasn't out of reach anymore
 
Yeah, I've been looking for a stereo mounting solution, my dash piece is all cracked and the radio just kinda dangles there. Let's see/hear some ideas :D
 
No ideas from me, I'm still looking for a decent new tape deck to install in my 77' K5 since the old Denon unit went out.
 
iirc, there should be room behind there....


How about over to the right a tad?

I've always liked that idea either for a CB or stereo, but I just can't make myself cut up my perfect dash pad. If it was all cracked and stuff I wouldn't mind, but it's probably the only one around here that I've seen that's not cracked.
 
your not cutting up the pad, just the insert trim... well, and a little mod to the duct behind it if you have factory heat...

it came that way, I've grown to like it there ...

at this point with the truck gutted, probably one of my new production dashs going in it, aftermarket heat, custom console, blah, blah, I could really go anywhere.. I MAY do a CB there, and move the stereo back to the stock location in a new dash..

I don't sweat cracks in my dash pad, it's black, don't notice em too much I guess... It IS the last interior piece I plan to swap.. I'll dye a clean one if need be when I come across one.....
 
Ive seen radios mounted on the front of center console, your hand can rest on the console, and you can play with the volume or switch stations. thats all i could think of.
 
I've seen tuffy consoles setup like that. Without carpet, it makes it hard to hide the wiring though.
 
i had one of the factory digital stereos in my k5 when i bought it. i just put a touch screen panasonic in the stock location. looks ok i think and is easy to get to.

easy to get to....its still in the factory location, causing you to look at the floor to look at it, you just wanted to pic whore that sexy touch screen :-) but really doesn't matter where you put it, if you have a remote control, now does it! :-)

Crappy picture but I just put mine in the stock location.


I've noticed that the steering wheel is a bit in the way but you'd think one of the later smaller steering wheels would fix that a bit. That said it's never really "in the way" for me. I don't mess with my stereo much while I'm moving so it's not like I'm flying down the road at 55mph with my head below the wheel staring at the display or anything.
To me having it over to the right on the dash would almost be worse as it's a bit of a reach for it then. I had a '92 Blazer K1500 and the way to put in an aftermarket stereo was to locate it in a similar spot in the middle of the dash and that definitely made it a bit less comfortable and easy to use.
 
Mine's in the stock location for now too, and once I find a clean dash bezel that hasn't been cut yet, I'm gonna cut it myself. The guy that did the one that's in my truck now did a horrible job and it's cracked in like 3 places.
 
Mine actually cracked so bad the lower right corner section broke off. However plastic dash pieces of the 80's weren't anything spectacular and then add 21 years of UV rays and heat cycles to it.

Crutchfield includes a black metal plate that goes between the radio sleeve and the dash and that's why mine looks so unblemished. Hides some of the hacking you sorta have to do.

It looks like all of your dash is there. Or did you do what I did and Gorilla glue it back together?
 
It's actually that metal plate I mentioned.

The wife's the only one who's been in there since I did it last May and she didn't say a word about it.
 
Wow, so the metal plate covers that whole section of the dash? Is it just square or cut to contour the dash?
 
Cut to fit that whole lower right section of the dash. That's why you can't really see where the plate ends and the dash starts.
 
Sweet, I'm gonna have to get a hold of Crutchfield and get one of those. I wonder if they sell them seperate.
