Well I went through the carburetor, and got it professionally tuned, and the choke adjusted and everything, but when I start to take off, it will hesitate really bad still. What else could cause this?
The entire carb was rebuilt. I rebuilt it and yes, both of those were replaced by me.
Would having metering rods that aren't specifically made for the carb be a problem? I broke a metering rod, and pulled a set out of an old carb. The numbers didn't match, but they looked identical. Could this be the reason?
Just changed the fuel filter but it is possibly clogged again. I'll have to check that tomorrow. Not sure about the fuel pump, it just got back from the shop and they didn't say anything was wrong with the pump.
Primary metering rods shouldn't matter right? I have a 70xxxxx carb, and the carb I took the rods out of was a 70xxxxx carb. They were just stamped with different numbers. Letters were the same.
cataylic converter still on? it could be plugged up. try a different carb to see if it acts the same? main jets size set up correctly for ur engine? could be many things. but those are what i have experienced in the past. including fuel filter but u mentioned it. hows ur timing? maybe bad moduler in the disturbor? not advancing enough when ur going?. could be many things but those are what pops up in my head now. and most important of all.. engine too weak for you??
Timing was just checked by the shop. They set and tuned everything, but now it's hesitating really bad. I checked the fuel filter, and that didn't help.
Makes me wish I had someone from here living around me so I could ask them for assistance in figuring out problems like this, instead of paying the shop a bunch of money.
Okay, I just figured something out. When the truck is cold, and at high idle, there is no hesitation. I had the shop tune the carb so it wouldn't idle so high, so that I could put it into gear without it kicking the transmission so bad. So now when it's put in gear, it hesitates, but when it's started cold it will idle higher and doesn't hesitate.
The plugs were brand new when I put the motor in back in July. This thing was just in the shop for over a week and they fixed like 10 things on it, they somehow didn't notice that it still hesitated really bad. I just hate to take it back and get charged out the ass again for it.
I second checking out the fuel pump... my truck was having weird problems like what you described (sputtering, jerking, etc. at various times...not consistent all the time) and I had it in a shop to get it checked out. They replaced the plugs, wires, distributor and checked the timing... ran ok so I took it back and the next day it did it again but this time left me stranded on the side of the freeway...
Come to find out the fuel pump had somehow slowly been dieing and then on the freeway that day it finally bit the dust... I replaced it (what a PITA!) and then everything was perfectly fine...
I guess the only way to "check" it, is to replace it and see if that fixes the problem? I still think the problem lies in the carburetor somewhere. And I was thinking switching from TBI to carb'd would be so much simpler. Apparently not....
I think anyway, it's gotta be the pump on the motor, so I'm guessing it's manual? I have an electric pump in my gas tank from when I had TBI, but it's not hooked up now.
The MFP's are a PITA to replace in my opinion (although I've only done one and it was my first time ever)... I unhooked the line running up to the carb and turned the engine over (with the hardline in a bucket) and it pumped a little tiny bit...

Then after the new fuel pump was in I did the same thing and it was night and day...
Its not expensive by any means for a brand spankin' new MFP BUT it can be a PITA to replace it... your call
It seems to run fine other than the hesitation, but I'm kinda considering trying the pump. I'll probably just take it back to the shop and bitch that it still hesitates like crazy.
Actually, will just turning the distributor just a bit, one way or the other, adjust timing enough to affect my hesitation? This could very possibly be the problem, since the shop it was at mostly concentrated on my choke and carburetor problem. Since I don't have a timing light and don't really know how to use one, I have no way of timing it myself.
