Any body done this? how does it sound? Or would it sound better with the 2 flowmaster single chamber 40's I have? Please give me opinions. I am thinking dual 3" if I straight pipe it. If I do the flowies it will be 2.5 to the mufflers (right after tcase) the 3" from there and possiblt 2 tips I dont know yet.

Ran it on mine, stock 2 1/4" pipe with muffler chopped off. Very loud, enough to drown out the sound of 39.5 boggers going 60. I will be putting 2 mufflers on mine when I am done building it.

I have staight pipe on my powerstroke, its a single 3.5 in pipe and it sounds good. If it were me I would straight pipe it, its not much louder than stock and a lot quiter than a straight piped gas engine. I dont know how the 6.2 will sound w/ straight pipe, but I have never heard a bad sounding deisel.

hope this helps some

Powerstroke = turbo
6.2 = no turbo

The turbo does quite a bit towards muffling the exhaust so you can usually get away with running straight pipes on a turbo diesel.

Straight pipes on a non-turbo equipped 6.2 will be L-O-U-D. I run dual 2.5" 40-series Flows on mine and just everybody thinks it sounds really good......they are usually pretty surprised when they find out it's a diesel. However, it is still pretty loud and has quite a bit of resonance inside with that setup.

Well thanks for the info, I forgot that the 6.2 was not turbo. I did not know that being non turbo made such a differance. I will keep that in mind.

I guess I will go with the dual 40's than. Thanks

My 6.2 with straight pipes was to loud, glad I put the mufflers back on.

It will sound like crap strait piped. Only the TD's sound good strait piped.

I would go and buy a good quality DIESEL muffler.

Are headers also going on it?

And before anyone laughs at me I will tell you that I saw an erly 80 furd desil that had headers and dual glass packs. It sounded very nice.

I've never seen or even heard of a set of headers for a 6.2 diesel. Only ATS comes close to that with a performance manifold for the Ram Cummins.

It didn't take long at all for me to make putting mufflers on my Blazer after I did the Diesel swap to it. Just way too loud and obnoxious.
But thats just me.

Ha, headers for 6.2's were factory pieces in Hummers.

Hey thats pretty darned cool...are they really worth much of a power gain? Do they look like an actual header?

Original Poster,

I don't exactly know what you plan on gaining from a new exhaust but I am familiar with pickups like mine.

When I go with a performance exhaust, I will be trying to lower the exhaust gas temperatures, promote more flow, add a nice looking exhaust, and have a nice performance diesel sound. Mainly the flow and EGT drop most importantly.

My point is, is that if I was going to spend money on a setup I would use a diesel exhaust, inluding a diesel muffler, so I get the best results for my modification. Those dual flowmasters may help some but (correct me if I'm wrong) a flowmaster designed for a gas engine does provide a fair amount of back pressure, gas engines like that. I would think that would just be added restriction behind a diesel since they pretty much prefer no back pressure. I would think a good strait through diesel muffler would provide better EGT's and power gains over dual gas mufflers. Maybe not though.

I have a 3 or 3 1/2 cant remember straight pipe right off my turbo on my 6.2, I love it, I have a 90 degree tip that shoots it straight down and makes it cackle really nice. Its not to loud for me...just my stereo is to quiet :grin:

The Hummer headers are tubular, but are not long tube. I imagine they'd help a little with power, diesel apparently really respond to free flowing exhuast. We'll see i guess.

As far as muffler choice goes, from what i understand the big thing with diesels is soot. Because of this the mufflers to avoid are glass packs which will eventually clog with soot. A Flowmaster is a pretty free flowing muffler and should do fine behind a 6.2. I currently run a single 2.5" 50 series behind my 6.2 and it does fine.

My plan is dual 3" 40 series flowmasters and the Hummer headers. I've heard with larger dual exhuast the NA 6.2 sounds very similar to a big block.
