I got it out to drive it today and it was running great. Then it stalled on me and wont start. Got no tools. Called Hagerty and I got a one hour wait. 13 miles from home...rain clouds moving in

It's getting fuel, I can see the vapor coming up from the carb.

Thought I heard a pop like a early detonation. No fluids coming out a
Anywhere...

Started and ran briefly, then stalled again

It's home now.

Just changed the distributor for a new one...all new components...maybe it's those R45TX...maybe they are too hot. Ever since I put in the new distributor and plugs it has been running on the hot side. It went almost to "H" at one point but did not spew anti-freeze. Pretty sure it was pinged though.

Now I gotta figure out what's wrong. First clue was it was running hotter after the new distributor.
And, in another thread about the fuel sending unit, I put techron and Lucas fuel cleaner in the tank and it helped the fuel gauge work again.

This is the first drive after the fuel additives...but it ran hot.

I am going with the running hot as the clue to persue.

So here is way it went today.

  1. Started and drove about 2 miles, everything running great. I gunned it and it stalled. It started right up, running great.
  2. I drove 3 miles to a wide open parking lot and did some swirve moves to shake up the fuel cleaners and move the sending unit float to help clean it...it stalled on me. Started right back up.
  3. Drove 1/2 mile to the gas station and topped it off so I would know exactly how much gas I had in it. Started it and drove for about 5 miles...noticed the temperature getting a little higher but not past 3/4.
  4. Drove 10 more miles and to the downtown area and stopped at a redlight. Noticed it go to "H". Turned off A/C and drove and watched it come down to a little under 3/4.
  5. Started to head toward the mountain driving straight and felt it start not feel right then pop (I assume a "ping") sound..I took an immediate right onto a side street where it ran and then stalled. Wouldn't start again.
  6. 20 minutes later I tried to start it and it started and I revved it a few times and then when I put it in drive it died. Would not start again...even with starting fluid.

Dist 180* out ? It can run and make it real hot .

I don't think so...but I suppose it is possible...what does one run like 180* out?

When I changed distributors, when the engine was off, the rotor just happened to be pointing in the general direction of the number 1 cylinder. When I put the new one in, it was pointed to the same area.

It will run like shit. Runs. But you will pretty much know you got a problem.

You need to confirm that it’s still getting spark and what the timing is if you can get it to start. Timing can definitely affect run temp.

make sure its top dead center compression stroke, pull number 1 and turn over with finger in hole you can tell it will push finger out

I will make sure on TDC. Does anybody think the R44TX are too hot..with the wide gap?

and what does "pinging" sound like?

I just watched a video and yes...what I had today was spark knok...no doubt about it.
