Strange idea for 84 Blazer interior mod..

Here is a drawing of my design..

Basically.. what is happening is that I am raising the floor height from below the front bench all the way back almost uniform. And chopping the wheel wells. And then putting storage beneath. And then by having the bench moved to the front, and fold forward, it will allow more room throughout.

Ditch the Blazer,,,and get a Suburban,,,don't have to worry about space :D

Ask Paul, i simply fold down the back seats, and i have a 10ft bed, with all KINDS of space. :waytogo:

I love working on my truck more than most people, but I still think several of these plans involve way to much effort.

As an alternative, why not just find some OEM bucket seats you like at a junk yard that recline etc... mount them in the front of your rig with quick-release connections on the rear-most mountings so they can pivot forward and allow access to the rear?

For rear seats, if they are a must, put in a couple of cheapo plastic buckets from Summit. Fab up some nifty brackets that hold them a bit off the floor and also have quick-release pins holding them down. Need to sleep in the rear? yank the buckets (which then become nifty water-proof camp chairs) and throw down the sleeping bag.

I think you should go out to a pick-n-pull and go find a monte carlo and get some swivel seats for the front. there kinda hard to find but there out there. they swivel and slide out to the side so you will have plenty of room to get in and out of the back. i also dont think you should cut the fender wells because you might need them if your wheel travel is too long. get a small air matress to put up back there. and extend the rear floor pan up twords the front more. you should have plenty of room.
 
My 90 V10 has reclining seats. Will later model seats fit your truck ?
 
ill tell you about my 6.2 diesel K5 i had a few years ago. the previous owner had taken out the back seat and used a carpet kit from a short bed truck.
the bench seats along the side was about wheel well high. from the wheel well back was a platform with ample storage under it. the seats along the sides also opend for storage he built a small wood platform, from the step in the bed to the back fo the front seats. the center of the floor had removeable boards covered in carpetthat simply pulled out and rested on the seat edges to make on long bed. if you dont understand this you realy need to look carefully at a truck with a fiberglass shell and a capet kit move stuff around and youll get the idea. it was plenty long to sleep in im 6'1"

I think I understand what you mean, Balzer. Sounds pretty cool. Was the seating in the back fomfortable at all? What did he use to make all this stuff? Any metal or just all wood?

I think the width of the seating area is about 62 inches. I guess I should check out all the other types of Blazer seats.. they may have come up with something better than what I have before or after.

Does your passenger seat fold forward and does it have a cable that prevents it from going forward too far?

it was an actual carpet kit out of a short bed truck he cut down to fit. it wasnt something you would want to ride accross the country in, but it was good enough for most people hauling chores like say around town

Here's what I did..

When I had my 72 K5,I made it into a rolling bedroom by removing the rear seat,and I cut 3 peices of plywood that hinged together with piano type hinges,so you could "unfold" it inside the truck and lay it on top of the wheelwells---I used plastic milk crates under it at the rear and front to support the corners and the middle--they allow storage,and the foot or so of space UNDER the plywood can be used to stash the spare tire,camping gear,and other stuff...

I'm 6'4" tall too,and I had to sleep diagonally,it was just a bit too short to sleep in a straight line--the 73-up Blazers had a bit larger cargo area than the 72 did though,so that might not be an issue..the only thing I didn't like was the fact my head would get bashed on the "ceiling" if I sat up in "bed" !--that took some getting used too! :doah: .... :crazy:
 
It looks like your new design won't work.

Won't the seat hit the steering wheel way before it ever gets close to being in the vertical "space saving" position you have in your diagram???? :thinking:
 
diesel4meI thought this was pretty cool with the front seats that spin around. Just dont put the rear seats in. Just an idea...

the only thing I didn't like was the fact my head would get bashed on the "ceiling" if I sat up in "bed" !--that took some getting used too! ....

diesel4me, that sounds really cool. If I can't figure out how to do it this way.. or if I don't have the guts to cut my wheel wells I might try this route. That's the biggest question for me.. I don't want my wheels hitting the lowered wheel wells. Gotta figure out some easy way to test that.

Greg72, I was planning on having the surface that the folding seat is mounted on slide on the tracks that my current seat slides on. Hopefully this works.
 
I hate to come into this so late, but take a look at this.

Blazer Bed Article

It's an article from an Old Four Wheeler, but looks like a well thought out plan to put a bed in back with no welding required.

I'd go this route and install buckets out of a 99 and up silverado (thats what I have). The Silverado buckets recline and have the integral seat belt and are more comfortable than the original K5 seats. Plus you could get the 20 section (from a 40/20/40) to mount between the buckets for a third passenger in the middle.

What a great article. That is a neat mod. I could either do that mod exactly as is or maybe use a lot of the same techniques to make it how I was thinking of as well.

That whole site is cool. Hadn't seen that before. Thanks! :D
