Stump Pullin' *Update with something added ;)

If you haven't cut the trees down yet leave a 3' stump or so, and then wrap a chain around it close to the top, this will give you leverage to pull the stump out. I've found that 6" diameter hardwood is about the max for pulling out on a single line pull with 8274 and the truck strapped to a another tree:)

I tried yanking a bush out of my buddy's front yard. I was moving at the time so I came over in a 24 foot diesel moving truck and all I could do was spin its tires on the sidewalk, hehe.

But now I guess I need some Preperation H to fix my brake line?

just sounds like you need some preparation...period. :haha:sorry, dude. had to zing you on that one.

seriously, though, don't ever put that kind of strain on an axle assembly. it's just asking for trouble. big trouble.

burning works. i've used gasoline. of course these days it would be cheaper to burn gold.

digging and root-chopping is the most effective way i've seen.

snatch block can give you a lot more pulling power, if you have another strong tree to anchor he other end of the rope/strap. nature still has the advantage, though.

Ok here are the pics!

Ok so here is the carniage first:

The funny thing is that braking isn't effected at all :doah:

So here are the stumps I'm attempting to pull: (sorry if its blurry)

Ya they are in the ground pretty good...
Also there was no snow yesterday...

Look at the bumper:

Not sure where to hook it too because I don't have a hitch reciever, and I don't want to ruin my bumper.

don't wreck your truck, its not heavy enough and no reciever.......don't do it that way.

....maybe it was on here......I can't recall. Someone put up 3 vid clips of him pulling stumps with his Duece and chain. pretty similar to those stumps but slightly bigger. He had a heck of a time with the 6x6 and a big chain. Got it done but it wasn't a cakewalk. was fun to watch though.

Gasoline. then a match. then distance.

just burn them down.

or even dig a hole aroun the base, then add gas, and then match, and then more distance.

Don't ruin that truck. There aren't enough step-sides out there these days...

Thanks!

Ya you are right, I don't want to ruin my truck but I have pulled from the axel before with no problems. I actually pulled BigBlaze out from my axel using a chain :doah: go figure...

Dude , As others have said give up on the thought of using your axle as a attachment point - BAD IDEA !
I've had great success with pulling serious stumps out by using heavy industrial chain ( 3/4" link or better ) around the stump , roots and all , and than attatch the chain to some extremely heavy rope similar to what a tug boat would use. The elasticity (sp) of the rope helps out tremendously and saves the trucks being used to do the pulling.
Start out on hard dirt or pavement if possible and go slow and easy and find that sweet spot between smoking the tires and good traction. Avoid wheel hop at all cost !
I have had good luck with using low range and second gear as it seemed to give me good wheel speed and good traction/power ( truck is a 02 Dodge with a manual tranny and a diesel engine).Easy going and massive traction are the key - do not use the snatch it method !
If possible saturate the roots with water to loosen up the soil around them so they will come out easier.
I've always used a reciver hitch and a pintle hook and have had no problems what so ever. By using the axle as an attatchment point you also loose the extra traction that the sling gives by pulling down a bit and helping the truck weight therefore increasing traction. Good luck !

BUY YOURSELF A RECEIVER HITCH FOR THE REAR BEFORE YOU TEAR YOUR REAR AXLE OUT AND DO EXTENSIVE DAMAGE!

Please don't pull an Avery!

I would get a hitch or some sort of frame mounted tow point as soon as you can.
Once you do that...
I've had good luck with digging a small trench around the stump, soaking with water, then slowly pulling away from the stump. So far I have had enough tow strap to get to my driveway or to the street for good traction. I haven't had to do it for any of my trees but I've seen it work where you set a piece of the cut trunk in front of the stump and lay the strap over it so when you pull it lifts on the stump too.

I did something similar last weekend but used my receiver hitch. Except this was only an old "shrub" with a 6" trunk. You really have to dig down around it to cut some of the big roots off. Even when I cut all the roots I could find, I wrapped a old snow chain around the stump in the trench I dug around it and then hooked it up to a 3" strap. It was tough to pull out at first, but just a little skinny pedel did it.

another technique i've was simply to hack the entire stump apart with an axe (i prefer a splitting maul) or circular saw. cut the entire surface in one direction, then again at right angles to the original cuts. make a wood waffle. don't try to make syrup from the sap. then, smash the waffle with a sledge or the blunt end of the maul and waffle again. dang good workout and then, you just leave a pile of woodchips that rot into the soil.

The problem is that there is no pavement or good traction around these things.

I think that I will use the tow strap sitting under my seat next time. I put it there so I could always have it with me incase I had to pull something out...

Got One stump out!!!

Ok so I finally got 1 of the 4 stumps out. All I had time to do yesterday was 1 so thats all I could do for now...

Check out the pics:

Stump Pullin 1.jpg

Ya this time I decided to use my tow strap as it is more forgiving than a chain...
And look, I'm pulling from the axel! :ignore:

Stump Pullin 2.jpg

Also I decided to use my ATV to do the pulling to spare any damage to the truck.

Stump Pullin 3.jpg

Right before the last pull when I found out that under neath the ground is still frozen. :eek1: :doah: I guess thats why my truck didn't even budge the stumps because about 1.5ft under the stump was frozen ground!

Oh and the snow you see was from a random 5 minute snow squawl that came while I was digging around the base of that stump. Kinda funky weather if you ask me!

Is it me or does it look like you bent your axle tube?

I don't think so... Might just be the angle of the picture. I hope not! :yikes:

Ouch, poor Avery, if he wasent here who would we pick on ?:haha:

You know, I was wrong for writing that and I owe Avery an apology. I guess I was a little too hard on him.

psh wtf do you mean pull an avery? :)
If it was me I'd just drill a big hole down into the roots...slide a couple M80's down, light the fuse and get the hell out of there....:)

Anyone see that show on discovery a while back where they blew up the beached whale expecting it to desentigrate into the sand/ocean? haha it blew 400+lbs chunks of whale blubber for miles...literally...rofl...see thats something I would do ;)

They did that in the Reno 911 movie... :D  :haha:
