ok i know this is probly a stupid question and ill probly get flamed for asking it, but they say the only stupid question is a question not asked lol so here we go. trying to go pick up a 87 k5 blazer i have a tow dolly i can use from a friend but im not sure if it would work because the k5 has 35's on it, would the straps go around the tires or would i need to let some of the air out? is this safe? id really like to use the tow dolly but if it doesnt ill have to rent a trailer from u-haul. im going to pick it up 2morro so i need some input asap. thanks dudes!

confused in ga

tow dollys have weight ratings just like anything else. Most that are big enough to tow a k5 are pretty beefy. I doubt you will be able to put the straps around the 35s just get some smaller tires. How far are you towing it. If its across country I say get a trailer, if its across town I think you will be fine just be slow and leave alot of room to stop

ok ill have to check the rating on the dolly, and changing the front tires is a good ideal i didnt think about that i have some stock rollers i could throw on the front. im only towing it like 100 miles and im using a tahoe. the tahoe can tow about 6500 im told so thats why i wanted to use the dolly to make it a lil bit easier on the tahoe.

Width the key; measure the outer width of your front tires, checking that against the dolly.

if the tow dolly doesnt work, most places dont have a car trailer wide enough for a k5.expecialy on 35's.i called 4 places before i found one with a adequate rating to carry a blazer.took me a couple days to get it also.
if you change out the front tires you should be fine on the tow dolly for that short distance.just take your time and make sure everything is strapped down good.

i've done it. uhaul won't rent you a trailer anyway (unless you tell them you're towing an s10 blazer) IME. just make sure you have the slim spare tires on the front because even regular tires are too wide a stance to fit. i brought one of my k5's home on a dolly behind an ass-tro van so you'll be fine.

Check the rating of the tow dolly tires too. I had a nice towdolly but my k5 wouldn't fit unless I put stock tires back on it. I hate tow dollys I towed a s10 with it and sold it quickly after

Just curious but how much does each end of a K5 normally weigh, I can't believe the rear end would weigh near as much as the front. So if the weight rating was close but the width was right couldn't it be towed backward to reduce the weight some, or is there some reason you cant do it backward?

as long as the steering stays locked, i don't see why not. i think that's what keeps ppl from doing it because you KNOW the back wheels will track straight; doing it backwards is a good idea but has more ways to screw up. plus it would just scream "pull me over and inspect"

I have had 2 tow dollys. Neither would haul a fullsize truck even with stock tires. I had to get wheels off a newer truck with a positive offset witch rubbed on the tie rod ends to tow my blazer with a tow dolly. Even then it just barely fit. I havent seen a tow dolly built wide enough yet.

well the tires i was talking about are like 4" wide. the cheap ones tht come with new cars. it barely fit on for me. i had like 3/4" inch clearance

I would strongly recommend against pulling it backwards. I started out pulling a Bronco II for a friend on one of our trips. Everything was fine for about
20 miles, then I started down a long downgrade. The steering that we thought was tight had just enough play to start whipping. Nothing I could do would bring it out of it. We ended up sideways in the highway, with the Bronco's bumper in my rear quarter panel. I felt really fortunate no one was coming, and that we stayed on the road. We turned it around on the dolly, and finished the trip without incident, but every time we came to one of the long downhills on the interstate, I couldn't help but pucker up a little. Longest 700 miles I ever traveled, and then 4 days later we had to do it all again to come home.

finaly got my baby home.

sup guys thanks for all the help and suggestions. well to start off with i thought niota tennesse was just over the state line, well it wasnt its a lot further from carrollton ga than i thought:o lol. i ended up towing it home with a reese tow bar like they use to pull cars behind the rv's. yea that was real fun going down i75 then i285 then i20 cruising @ 50-55 mph:eek1: thats like a 4 1/2 hour ride 1 way of nothing but horns being blowed, semi's trying to run me off the road, and a holes tail gating and then getting mad when they should have just gone around me in the 1st place:doah:. but i finaly got it home thanks again fellow ck5'ers.

wheel caster angle

going forward makes a vehicle tend to go straight......

backwards tend to go in a circle.......:D

find a big flat open space & try it

put it in reverse, hands off & let her go

I've only used a tow dolly couple times, but they were cars or a 2wd truck, even then the truck didn't fit very well on it.

I use a tow bar for everything now. I've towed 4wd dually's, crew cab's, thing works great. HOPEFULLY gonna be getting a 4wd crew cab this week, and will be using the tow bar for that.

I have the one that bolts to the bumper or part of the frame. Kinda sucks if you have a nice bumper, but the upper bumper bolts are the perfect width.....

yea i thought about askin this question on pirate4x4 but i was like naw, i woulda got my a$$ handed to me on there lol:haha: yall alot more laid back thats what i love about ck5. imma join soon ass i get some extra cash :D. thanks again guys

Hey I was trying to remember who bought those....You need some thick skin to post on pirate. Biggest thing there is make sure you search for at least an hour with all different kinds of key words, cause if you say you searched and didn't find it, and someone else did, they will give you all sorts of sh!t..
