Is a 4L60 the same as a 700R4? Are they compatable? Besides my Allison trans, this is the first auto I have ever owned. In my 16 years of driving I have always had manuals. I am trying to see what my options for easy upgrades are for this trans with a NP208 t-case. Thanks

Yes, a 4L60 and 700r4 are basically the same transmissions as they changed the naming convention. Keep in mind that a 4L60E is different in that it is electronically controlled.

Well i've heard there are 2 different kinds of 700 r's to look at. one being stronger than the other? Is this true?? This is just what the tranny guy told me.

The early ones through '84 or so had a 27 spline input, while the later ones had a 30 spline.

I was meaning more of the internals like clutches but that of course would make it stronger also too or maybe that's what the guy meant

They were improved in one way or another just about every year from '85-'89. '87 got a secondary valve body, for example.
