suburban barn door handle issue

going through all the bs of just getting a new-to-me rig and the burb was missing the button to open the rear barn door. sooo, i order a new one from LMC and bolted her in and the little push rod deal just pops up over the actuator to unlatch the door. i lubed up the whole works but even when the actuator is all the way up, the push rod just bearly clips the top of it. i'm not sure if i can bend that pushrod down without breaking it, or maybe weld a nut on the end of it so it hits it better.

anyone come across this???

I'm trying to remember from when I had to fix my dads. I can't seem to find a good picture of the handle/latch/rod.
