Suburban will not start

97 2500 Suburban Turbo Diesel 129000 miles on it I had the injection system changed 115000 miles under warranty...today it started idle raced up and then cut out the engine...left a smell of burning plastic...looked under hood battery connections are corroded and I have changed them in the past....seems the smell is coming from that area....truck turns over but will not start...would this hinder it from starting and just keep cranking like it is doing?

Are your glow plugs cycling?

If the engine doesn't turn over fast enough it can fail to start (i.e. low voltage from bad connections)
 
It is in the dealership now and I am scared to hear what is wrong. But to answer your question the glow plugs seemed to be working I could hear them as always

Well it was running and raced up and died means your engine ran out of fuel.
Either your tank is empty, your filter plugged or you got a cracked line and got air in the system.
That is what I think it is.
Hopefully the dealer won't find anything else wrong. :confused:
 
Got word back from the dealer....It is the fuel injection system that I had replaced a little over a year and a half ago. They did the job for free due to the fact that the truck was under 120,000 miles and they warranty the fuel system that they know to be faulty. Now the truck has 129,000 on it and they say they cannot honor the warranty work they did before because I put more than the 12,000 on it and now it will cost $2,700 to get it running. I raised a little hell and am now waiting to hear back from the GM area rep to see if they will cover it. I feel since it is the same issue as before they should honor it due to the fact that they fixed a faulty party with a faulty part. I have put less than 20,000 on it since the prior work. My decision now is to spend $2,700 every 20,000 miles or move on to a new vehicle.

Your reasonning is correct, if they fixed it and it went bad again this fast they should fix it for free, but that is not how things work, I wish you luck on that one.
Try your best though you might get it.
I didn' have luck with warranties so that is why never try, and I don't have anybody do the work, I don't expect a warranty to be honored, there is no Honor in automotive business. :o
 
I doubt it needs a new IP, but the dealership will replace it if any of it's components malfunction. IMO it is the PMD/FSD that is bad, not the pump. The PMD (PMD=Pump Mounted Driver, FSD=Fuel Solenoid Driver, two names for the same thing) fails because it gets too hot mounted to the side of the injector pump. The best fix is to get a new PMD and a heat sink kit, which will pretty much eliminate future failures. The pump itself should easily last 150k miles or more before a rebuild is necessary.

To Hell with the regional guy. Start at the top. Send a letter to Detroit, GM's President / CEO. CC one to the highest guy in Detroit in customer service or vehicle maintenance, service whatever.

Often they will at least re-route your letter to local. Messages from the top carry more clout:D

Then when you get your vehicle back do the PMD relocation.
 
MaxPF thank you for sending me that site. I will still push for GM to do the work but in the mean time I will order the new PMD from these guys. I did not realize they had so much performance stuff for this truck. Thanks again

There are other places for 6.5 performance parts as well. Kennedy Diesel and DSG (Diesel Services Group) are a couple more to look at :thumb:
 
The Suburban is back up and running. I got a PMD that my buddy has as a spare. I got the truck home and grabbed the wiring harness to which I found that the male connector was totally fried. It cooked 1 of the resistors right off the PMD. There was no way I was going to be able to plug the borrowed PMD in to see if I could start the truck. So again my buddy came to the rescue. He had a spare harness that we spliced to the old one. After figuring out we mixed up the red wires on first splicing the truck fired right up. He said he has never seen one burn the plug like that. I am glad that the truck is running and now I am just waiting for the relocation kit and remote harness to come in. The dealer only mentioned the burnt harness at the very end when he knew I was totally not letting him repair the truck. His laast words were that he would repair the PMD if I wanted. The very thing he said would not be a fix at all. I wasted about $250 in towing and $120 on the dealer to look at truck and try to screw me over but I now feel as though I am ahead of the game with the truck up and running...Thanks again MaxPF

I'm glad to hear you got it going :waytogo: It sucks that the dealer tried to play games though :( Maybe you could take the dead PMD to the dealer and have him give you a new one for your troubles, to keep as a spare :rolleyes:

Speaking of which, keeping a spare PMD and the necessary tools to change it handy is a good idea if you frequent remote areas with your rig. It will probably never fail with the remote mount cooler, but if it does and your in the middle of nowhere you will sure be happy to have it :wink1:
