Thinking of replacing the radiator on my 79 Jimmy, shud I upgrade and go new and improved or stick with the stock and just refurbish it ?

What's your price range and intent? If you just need something that works (probably) the sub-$100 parts store cheapies will do.

If you want something nicer, Mishimoto is about as good as you can get.

If you have a copper/brass, and haven't priced out getting it recored, you may have your mind made up for you.

No real price range, but don't want a cheapie one or a super expensive one either...is Mishimoto a high end radiator? What do they run ?

They are pretty high end. Started to hear failures of the higher end stuff like griffin and the like, so nice to have a quality alternative.

Don't think I'd waste money on an in between. Champions do ok, some failures, but don't fit quite right. Also have my doubts about the heater hose fitting size.

The plastic cheapies from parts stores fail at a decent rate, but for under $100 and free lifetime warranty, if you don't mind the potential for that failure, cost wise they are pretty hard to beat. Generally fit properly too.

Ok so safe to say to just go with the better quality more expensive one? Or depending on cost of recoring the stock one..

If it's between those options, it's Mishimoto or parts store cheapy.

Last I looked at recoring a stock radiator it was $500. About 10 times more than what I expected lol.

ya re-coring a radiator has gotten so expensive, the last one I did was $69 for a chevy radiator, last year I was quoted $450 to do a toyota 22RE radiator.

I would still look into getting yours re-cored if it a copper/brass unit, prices may be cheaper in your area. If not then I would look into an aluminum one, I have ran a couple of the chinese ebay specials and have not had any problems but i do see complaints all the time about them.

Ok thx and $69 dang how long ago was that lol...

Yes, post up what you are quoted. If you can have it done way cheaper, totally worth it.
Will do... I'm on the Mishimoto site now and whats the difference between the 2 row and the 3?

Honestly I'm not positive other than just theoretically cooling better, although thick two cores apparently cool better than three smaller cores. Make sure the height is right. Want to say 17" height is the less common size, 19" is "normal".

It sucks they still don't make radiators like the OEM ones for reasonable money..

A few salvage yards locally still have old school buses full of various older OEM radiators that are still in good shape, being stored "indoors"--just have to be sure the one you pick not only fits, but wasn't housing a bunch of mice...pickings get slimmer with passing of time though, every time copper prices go up,the buses start emptying out...luckily they scrap the ones the mice got into first so far!..

I've had mice destroy two perfect oem radiators I had in my truck body storage shed...mouse piss must be similar to battery acid..:angry1:
I learned to cork off the hose fittings and keep a cap on them the hard way..I only have one or two left and they were only single row or double rowed ones--the ruined ones were 4 cores from BBC vehicles!..only got $30 in scrap for them at the time too..
