So I'm on to my third K5 now... I got a new job and finally got what I really wanted. I have always wanted a full top but couldn't afford the motor swap cuz I don't really like carbs. Finally got a career now not just a couple crappy paying jobs but enough of that.

I bought a 73 K5 with a 454 TBI, TH350, and a tcase I'm not to sure on. I talked to the guy awhile before buying it and seemed like a ok guy. He did the motor swap him self and was ganna build a cage and blah blah blah... 454 with 10 bolts he told me after the first one blew up he rolled another 10 bolt under it... I'll leave it at that... I figured with the TBI 454 i wouldn't really need to do a motor swap cuz it's fuel injection then I looked up the specs on them and after finding out how heavy and not as much power as was thinking I'm back to square one. Witch I'm ok with I would like to do a LS swap with a 4l60e. I also need to fix quite a bit of rust on the floors and back that i over looked when I bought cuz the guy said "rust? no way this things goods" should of figured he was lying with all the mud on and IN IT!!! :doah: I was just excited...

This time around I decided to do things the right way once and not have to worry about things. Would like to find a LS motor with a 4l60e behind it with a ORD magnum box and a 205 tcase. Soo this whole build will take some time but I'm hoping someday I'll being playing on the rocks again! My goal is to go out to the Blazer Bash 2016!!! But this is also my first hardcore build and I'm a lil low on the knowledge part, man power, and skills... I'll be asking a lot of questions for all knowing guys out there and using the search bar quite a bit. Ha

So let me start with the pile of parts I started stocking up on. me and buddy built a full float 14 a long time ago (was going to go into my other build) got a WFO truss/pinion guard that my buddy welded on for me, had WFO do my disc conversion cuz I don't has access to a bearing press and I had to get new hubs, so while they ware in there they rebuilt it with new bearings, seals, pads, rotors and I had them put a Yukon locker with 4.10 gears in it. I then decided to scrap the that locker cuz I want this rig to be nice on the road so I went with a ARB locker and 4.56s cuz I'm planning on running 40s. While they had my axle thiss time I had them shave the 14 a lil bit and put a 1350 yoke on it. I think that covers the rear axle... Stock shafts wont be staying in there for those that are ganna call me out on that! Ha Here's a picture for y'all. I only got 1 picture with it out of the truck...

I started cutting the rear brackets off so I could do the DIY4X Shackle flip kit. Started with a grinder then went to a drill then back forth... Man do i hate rivets... And there's SOO MANY ON OUR TRUCKS!!! Ha But finally got the rear cut off and brackets on. Took a flapper wheel to a bit of the frame so it looks clean. Here's what it looked like when I was done with it.

I then called Allcan up for some custom springs! I had them make me some 57 inch springs with a 4 inch arch, long clamps, and military wrap. I was pretty happy with springs when I got them but when I installed them I totally forgot that the kit is made for 56 inch springs... Ha So the noob moves begun. :doah: Here's how my shackle angle is with the weight on them.

Soo I guess I'll be moving the bracket back an inch. Shouldn't be to bad right just drilling a frame... Ha I haven't tackled this just yet cuz I wanted to start on the front end and that lil hick up along with other things that I had going on in my life bummed me out so I left it for now. Won't stay like that I promise guys!

I picked up stock Dana 60 and the told me he "rebuilt" with 4.10s... So figured after getting burned by the meth head on the truck I should open this up and look for my self... Let me show you what I found.

On the way home in my buddies truck.

And when I cracked open the front I found.

Now I'm no expert or anything but that doesn't look like new diff fluid to me. Ha So then I decided to rebuild it the right way. Started ordering parts and while I was waiting i stripped the axle down to housing and gears. Cleaned it all up and painted it all pretty.

Lots of oven cleaner and flapper wheel.

So dropped the housing off at WFO and had them regear it for 4.56s, ARB, had them change the kingpins for me, drill and tap the housing for a third stud. Then the goodies started coming in from RCV, Reid, ORD high steer arms, Yukon locking hubs, went to Ruffstuff for some hiem steering and a beefcake diff cover. Still trying to figure out if I should hydro assist or what... Could use some help in that part. I want it a street friendly rig that I can drive to the trail and not have a problem on the trail. Soo no full hydro I know that much but other then that haven't done research on it yet just cuz I'm not that far.

I started building up the Dana 60 and I think I did everything right... Ha Here's the finished product with out steering just yet. Don't have access to a welder.

So then I started on the front end. I wanted to do the normal 52 inch springs up front so went with the A Bomb bumper from DIY4X. Figured that would make things a lil easier. Here's what it looked like all after a couple coats of white primer I then did a lot of black so it doesn't stand out honorably.

After I got the bumper painted I deiced I would start removing all the crap on the front end... Let me tell you guys doing it by my self was a not the beez knees but I got most of the old crap out. Still need to cut the rivets off the shackles on the front. Ordered the some stuff from ORD to get that job done! :waytogo: I did finally get the bumper with a lot of struggle... I'm thinking my frame is a lil effed up... The steering box area has already been welded up with some sweet booger welds so I have that going for me. Ha I have the weld in brace in the pile of parts for this one.

This is pretty much where I am at now. Waiting on some parts to finish the front end. Need to order some small bits here and there but I'm not sure where to look for them or can't find them. Does anyone know the part number for ARP studs for the Dana 60? I need 3 new ones. I could only find stock replacement studs... Kinda want something a lil stronger. Ha

Thanks for the help guys! I hope I'm doing this right!

Damn. Good job. Lots of awesome parts!!!!!! So far so good. Going to be awesome!!!

Looks like your doing it Right to me! :waytogo:

To secretive for a pic of the truck itself? I love full verts!

Ha It's super ugly right now. I was ganna wait tell it's rolling and maybe cleaned up a lil bit before I scar y'all for life.

+1 get some pics posted so we can watch the progress
Looks like you have a good start with all of those parts so far. :waytogo:

I would stick with the 454 if it going to be a crawler. The low end torque is much better than a GEN III small block.

I don't really want the super heavy motor up front. I can always make the lack of low end with tcase and the gears in the axles. And from what I found the TBI 454 doesn't really make anything amazing.

The weight difference is no more than having an adult riding shotgun.

Also would like something that will get double digits MPGs. Ha A 454 is cool and all and could be a great barging rights thing but want to be able to drive it around and not get annoyed with mileage and noise.

Cool build! Since you are in the Sacramento area, let me know if you need any help with the build. Im in El Dorado county not too far from the Rubicon Trail. I frequent that trail often in the summer and it would be cool to meet up with some fellow CK5ers in the area for an all fullsize run on the Rubicon.

Definitely will remember the helping hand! I'll need all the help I can get. Ha I would like to get it going by next snow season so I could figure out the bugs by Blazer Bash 2016. Once I get the front end buttoned up I'm ganna start moving to the interior. Need to get rid of all rust that's not there... :doah: Then I'll be saving up for cage work. I don't have a welder nor the skills to build my own cage so I was just ganna ask around town to see who would give me the best quote. Was thinking WFO but I'm not sure I would able to afford them! Ha Would rather say I built my own cage tho.
