So I continue my ongoing research into building a beastly motor. I'm comparing some super chargers right now. Firstly I know the 142 is nowhere big enough for my application.

The motor is going to be a 383 fully forged, AFR Eliminators, roller cam (gonna call comp on this one). I'm shooting for 8:1 or 8.5:1.

That being said I have been doing alot of reading on super chargers. I've read that the weiand 177 is plenty to put 5-8psi on a 383. I've also read that due to design advances of the magnason 122 that it pumps air on a big cube motor like its much bigger than it actually is. But at the same time I've seen guys state that the mp122 w/o intercooling is basically a weiand 142 equivalent.

I've seen dyno sheets of the magnason making over 700hp on an LS motor at 427ci but I'm pretty sure that its one of their intercooled units that they dont offer for SBCs.

Thoughts? Comments? Knowledge to share?

Magnachargers and weilands are a roots style. There is a difference between the roots and twin screw design. The twin-screws are more efficient. Magnason does have a TVS based blower, which is a sort of a hybrid between a roots and a twin screw.

Look into a whipple setup. They make them for carb setups, and can be intercooled.

Hmmm $2900 vs $2300 isnt bad for such a better design.

If I had to do it all over again, I might look into a screw type charger...

I just like the looks and sound of the roots blower...

What are you thinking for fuel supply ? Carbs ? Injection ?

I'm probably gonna stick to carbd. I had considered the fact that a tpi setup with the blower would remove all of the runner restrictions inherent of the TPI and basically just give me a fuel/spark management system.

Initially the plan was a single 1050cfm of some type with a 6al with boost retard.

AZ do you mind sharing what series that blower is and what it cost you? Also how tall is the blower housing its self?

Just a whipple 5.7L kit used from ebay for 2k...made the missing fuel hoses...$250 for the chip. No longer have to fight the hills out here...just light throttle and i am up and moving..
Would have to measure next time i am home...but its not taller that the fan shroud and i run a stock 79 hood. Running 3 degree's advanced with out ping...plan on trying water methanol injection next to gooch a few more degree's of timing out of her.

That thing does not look like the blower, a carb, and air cleaner would fit under a 3in cowl hood in my car lol.

Maybe I'll look into that TPI swap lol. Is that what your using?

Centrifugal supercharger. Vortech or Procharger or........ all stays nicely underhood. you can intercool it and ram it through a carb still.

.............and I've got a 1050 holley dominator converted to blowthrough by C&S specialties. if you're interested :waytogo:

Nah that was the original plan but I dont want the hassle of tuning a blowthrough carb. Plus I've always wanted a motor with a huffer ontop...

TBI injection...howell harness...gm parts...whipple chip.
Set the timing at zero like normal...set tbi outlet pressure
to 15 psi... (between tbi outlet with whipple fitting that
runs a line to whipples vpr) and away u go.

Where the hell is the TBI?

No turbo because I dont want to deal with blowthrough and twinscrew/roots have 0 lag.

I honestly would not trust a whipple chip, they make great chargers but there customer service and supporting parts suck. For tuning purposed get a wide band oxygen sensor and tune your self, you will get way more power and reliability out of the setup

Tbi bolts to the back of the unit....
Have to run a 94 only a/c bracket to make the serp set up work.

Ya...whipple is a lil to big for their britches. Could do without the
attitude. I don't have the time to fool with burning chips. About all
i have time for anymore is run it on a rare day off and log data.
