I think more people burn up winches because they -
a) don't know how to operate one
b) don't care how they operate one

single line pulls on a partially wound drum decreases the pulling power by a bunch. even a small 8000 lb winch can pull 16 -24 K with a double or triple block setup when pulling in the first or second wrap...

Don't blame the winch for failing on single line pulls at stall line loads.....

By the same right, lower quality winches will burn up easier than good winches.

I use my winch nearly every time I go out, I have only doubled up the rope 2 times (with hundreds of single line pulls) and it has never complained.

The same Warn 8274 has been on the front of my truck for 25 years and it has performed flawlessly.

If you actually use your winch sometimes, doubling up and/or slow winches gets old really fast.

I've been around a lot of winches from basically every brand. None impress me like the 8274 does (including the other Warn winches). The only real drawback to the 8274 is its size, most K5 owners have no problem finding room for it.

I have a ramsey 12000 ( old school)on the front of my 83 K5 . Two summers ago i had it buried to the frame in quick sand on the south canadian, once a good anchor was located(old ford truggy and then two 4x4 quads all buried to the frames on a sand bar) the only problem was i snapped the cable. I would like to see just how mm and warn would stand up to that kind of pulling, as for hydraulic it dont work if the truck aint runnin!!!!! Needless to save all winches have good and bad points it just depends how you use them. Not very many winches on trucks around here they mostly do the redneck jerk and tear s**t up, so most of my friends call me for a recovery.

I still have my MileMarker E12,000 on the back of my truck. Scared to use it, I just see it crapping out again.

yea those harbor freight ones are "Chicago" brand and my buddy breaks one every year. he bought one with a 1 year warranty so about every 10 months he uses it and it breaks with little effort. then he takes it back and gets another one... but yea there ****

Knee deep snow and open diff front and rear = separating the china built wenches from the rest...So having that said, what 12000lb winch would you get?

I just bought a M12000 with controller, fairlead, cabel, warn mounting base & fairlead on ksl for 500.00 and the guy has more available. He's asking 600.00 btw.

Edit; I just noticed how old the thread is.
