What exactly is needed in extra parts for swapping in a d44/14bff into my 89 K5?? i have the stock 10b f/r with 3.08 or 3.73 gears(i think) right now. exploded the rear and dont want the hassle. I know i will need rims and conversion u-joints for the 3/4 ton axles but is there any other stuff? Will driveshaft length be a problem with the bigger rearend? not sure if the yoke and diff stick out farther. all steering stuff should work, d44 has tie rod and pitman drop on it i guess. Any swap info appreciated!!!!!

breake lines for front are not gunna match, why you goin through trouble of putting in a dana 44??
just put the 14ff in rear and you good ta go;)

and if the ff came out of a 3/4 then you all set

matching gear ratio, mine are stock....whatever that is ive heard 3.08 and 3.73 and 3.42......i will look at stamp in ring gear. Anyways thats why i am putting both in, they 4.10

and ya they out of a 3/4 tone burb, id made sure they were the right ones for spring perch width lol, and they have open diffs so i have a good rear candidate for a detroit or spool, not sure what fronts getting yet

dont worry about your front brakes, you can just keep your 89 caliper hung up and install it right back on the d44. as for the rear, i think there might be some ebrake changes, but is a relatively simple swap to the new style.

make sure with the new d44 you got it comes with ubolts on the pinion yoke, those are often forgot about. all of the ten bolts ive seen used straps instead.

you need the spring plates off the 14 bolt, and its a good idea to get the ubolts too.
have a new set made and bring those as a template and just get them to adjust the length or whatever. dont re-use the old ubolts.

while the axles are out, inspect/change the centering pins in the springs. also, lose the swaybar lol!

I think the pinion ubolts are on there.....there will be no problem with driveshaft lengths then i take it?? if not thats good news. and all my steering crap will work? as for spring plates and ubolts, does any auto shop carry what i will need (ive looked at some before i guess) or what? sorry for all the questions but im trying to figure out my budget on how much this swap should cost. if it just new u-joints, ubolts, spring plates, and pinion u-bolts if mine are gone it should be really cheap to do!! minus 400 for rims.....since nobody ive talked to has 15in 8 lug rims or knows someone who does!! PS the just from 3.42 to 4.10 should be great!

youll think you have a hot rod!

as for the driveshafts; if they work now, youll probably be ok.
but i will say this, every truck seems to be different. theres only one way to tell, and its to test fit it. you can get by sometimes by swapping in a zero rate and adjusting the wheelbase slightly but dont count on it.

for new ubolts on the spot, try a spring place. people who make springs, will make ubolts while you wait. typically 10 bucks a piece, but you can order them from vendors here for about the same, but plus shipping. spring plates could probably be made there as well, or buy from vendors.

finding the proper pinion ubolts if i remember right was a royal pain. good luck with that.

Ok thanks!! mines a 89 K5 with 4" lift (TC) 35" TSL boggers, f/r 10 bolts/3.42/700r4 with shift kit/ np241 tcase/350 Tbi........the tires are the cause for this ruckus on getting the axle swap done......the rear blew up lol. i will have to check ring gear just for good measure on ratio...i though it hauled down the highway fine when i had 35" radial MTs, passing cars was a breeze this should be interesting! and it mudded great with the new tires too, just blew when i pulled a friend out from semi solid ground

I just did this swap on my 89 with a 4in lift. I am running a 15in rim. I just did a 2in back spacing so no shaving was nessesary. I think you got everything You need. I just bought the simple swap from ruff stuff and that was all I needed for the rear end.

Cool, this is gonna be a bit simpler and easier than i expected, and cheaper! i kinda counted on having to do some caliper shaving but i will decide when i order rims or if i find used ones, wheel spacers would work too i think but they hard on bearings and such, but be nice to get tires an inch or 2 further out. how did the d44 go in for you? just like the 10bolt came out lol? everything was compatable? I think im good to go with what ive heard and learned so far! Be nice to get it done, then instead of breaking gears and axles i can break u-joints!!................or worse lol

I wonder why someone doesn't sell D44 8 lug and D60 front brake calipers that will work with 15" wheels with no grinding. I bet they would sell a lot of them. Vendors, are you listening?

Sounds like there is a market for these calipers. Now who's going to step up and meet the demand?

Hmmm...So this is just some special mounting brackets from what I can see. I guess you use the stock calipers from a D60 though? I was hoping for just a special capliper that would let 15" wheels slip over them. For the price, I think I would rather spend an hour or two with a grinder and some paint.

Thanks for the link Obijuan. I like your golden transfer case by the way.
