RE: 1991 GMC Jimmy

Hi - Can anyone tell me if there is a guide, or website that discusses how to swap out the stock automatic hubs for a set of after market manual hubs, such as a set of Warn Hubs or equivalent. I have never done this before, but feel it is something I can do, rather then pay the labor cost at a garage.

Thanks,

should be pretty straight forward...new hubs should come with the installation instructions...shouldn't have to do anything but remove auto hubs and replace with manual ones...

Here's the tools you need and a few photos of the components. It's pretty straightforward. Just remember, you will probably have to reach around and push the axle out toward the wheel to get the slip ring on.

One thing the pics above dont show is.(because those are manual hubs). There is a small metal cover on the outer edge of the auto hubs. You must remove the cover and squeeze together the 2 pins you see in there to remove the outer lock ring so the auto hub can be pulled out.
Wnen you get the outer lock ring and snap ring around the axle off. Thread in 2 of the screws back in the hub and use them to pull on to get the hub out.

Super easy. Just did this when I went 3/4 axles and takes about 10 minutes per side.

If I remember right, there was an inner and outer snap ring on the outside of the auto hub. You can discard them or save for spares. The warns don't use the inner snap ring that goes on the outside of the auto hub and comes with it's own outer ring. The manual hubs slide right in and the cover screws on.
