i broke some stuff at the mud bog yesterday on my k5. the brackets and bolts holding the power steering pump broke and my pulleys were't quite lined up anyhow. fixing it with old stuff is silly and a buddy told me to just swap to the 1 belt setup. what does it take to swap to a 1 belt serpentine off the newer 350 motors to a pre 86 motor? i dont want ac but need to run my water pump alternator and power steering and the crankshaft pulley

Serpentine brackets, all pullies, New reverse rotation water pump, New style alternator. I did this on my old 86 dually, took a bit of research to get the wiring on the new alternator figured out, but I got it. Don't remember wiring pin diagram now though, but info is out there.

I went ahead and bought all the accessories. Chances were, they'd be newer than mine. Found out I actually need the newer smog pump, the '85 wouldn't work. The valve on the output needed modifying.

The alternator that came with my setup only had the one wire connector pin, so I hooked that to the exciter wire. Hope that was right :) ~92 C1500 V6

junk yard parts run 4.3 -up small blocks get the brackets / h20 pump / cooling fan and clutch / pulley only for p/s need a puller tool / alt / and look for a non a/c delete bracket-pulley that bolts in place of a/c comp / crank and h20 pump pulleys also.

need to remove the p/s pulley first then the pump and last get the hidden bolt behind the pump no way around it.

save all the hardware also. just in cause.

and some will be studs with inverted tork';s drive on them.

otherwise basic bolt on swap and your old p/s pump will be just fine. even if running hydro boost.

I have a set of brackets and pulleys w/hdwre removed. Would do $110+ shipping

ao besides the brackets and the ac bypass pulley what else do i need? water pump alternator?

all the accessories are specific to the brackets except the PS pump according to SweetK30. the serp setup uses its own water pump, and your alternator will be the older style and will not work.

so 95 water pump 95 alternator with a harness rigged up and will my 86 power steering pump work or do i need a new one?

'89 water pump will work too, same for alternator, also need reverse rotation fan and fan clutch.

read my post.

and you can even use a 79 p/s pump just swap the bolts that hold it to the bracket to american.

play it safe get all the stuff its cheeper than running back 3-4 times.

only reason behind asking the questions now is im gonna use my work discount to go ahead and buy new power steering pump and lines to make sure i dont have to go back and fix bad junkyard stuff later. its a long wqay back off the trail with no power steering or water pumps to cool motors

o.k.

but your old pump will bolt up no problems.

i did this on my 79 plow truck and just had to swap to american bolts being it was that old.

the old pump is about 4 days old. i bought it friday to replace the one that didnt work. the next day we had a problem with the whole thing coming apart due to old bolts breaking. the pump is still good so if i can use it great.

I swapped a serpentine system on to the crate motor for my 86 burb...I think I got an alternator adapter from these guys...:waytogo:

I hate to bump and old thread but there is good info here. I'm looking to do the same but I'm curious to know if I can just use the new PS pump for my existing 85 chassis that uses hydroboost considering I already have that pump and pulley for serp set up.

Has anyone tried swapping the alternator pulley itself, I understand its mounted in a different location but its worth a shot.

I haven't decided yet to keep AC or not but I realize I will need a different A/C compressor and possibly fittings, especially since I have rear AC.

can use hydro bust pump no problems. if you dont need 2nd return line cap off the upper one and hook up lines like normal.

older alt wont fit in the serp brackets with out MAJOR MODS. and using the newer gets you 95-110 amp range over the 60-70ish of the older stuff.

just get a/c lines for the year of the doner if same body style then use the newer a/c comp . and 85 might need to convert to r-134a . if no a/c used then get a delete bracket and pulley to swap inlace of the comp.

i ended up robbing a junkyard 89 305 of its setup. i bought a new water pump power steering pump alternator and the ac delete bracket. the alternator wiring we had to rig with its plug but everything works great. headlights are brighter chargings is good powersteerind dont fade anymore due to the old v belt slipping. havent tried it in the mud yet to see how she holds but on the street shes done great

dont need p/s pump if yours is good. i used my 79 pump on my swap years ago and still going.

my fittings were different and i wanted to get rid of the ghetto rigged pressure line i had made so i swapped pumps. whopping 40 bucks another reason i lokve 73-87 chevys...dirt cheap new parts

perfect! I like how well this thing stops and I don't want to have to do more work than I have to, I guess that goes with the alternator too. I don't need the higher output but it couldn't hurt and bolt on is always easier.

Looks like i need to go to the junkyard to get an alternator, ac delete pulley (or just buy new for 22 dollars) and crank pulley and I'll be set ( I have everything else)

ill worry about the AC in the spring time
