Swing out tire hinge??

I ordered a double shear one from this place, never got it. From google review it looks like this problem happens alot.
I was wondering how the service was. I usually stick to the well known places like ORD and DIY4X that you know you can count on.

I was pleased with them. I typically use the same trusted vendors as well. It was my first time using them and the shipping was quick.

That looks like the one I have. Having the pin build in is super nice, especially if the truck is sitting on any sort of angle.

Let me ask since I also have a “fold down” tire carrier. What’s the motivation to making the change to a “swing out”?

For me, it was the ease of access to the back. If I'm out for a weekend or a weeklong trip I am constantly getting in and out of the back. Stopping for lunch or needing to get a tool the tire has to get out of the way to open the door of the camper. When in camp mode you drop the tire and forget about it until it's time to go the next day. The problem in camp mode is the Trasharoo I have for garbage is on the ground under the tire and not accessible. Then when it is time to go I have to get the tire back up again and its usually covered in dirt.

Granted my situation is unique with the camper. But the bottom line for me was to manage the weight of moving the tire when I needed to get access to the back. Swinging out of the way on a 10bolt spindle is effortless compared to lowering or lifting the tire every time. Then the bonus is using the lockout to hold the swing arm out of the way where I want it regardless if the ground is flat or on a slope. Yes, when it's time to actually use the spare it's going to suck, but its doable.

In a regular Blazer where you can reach back there and roll the window down to get to something in the back you might not have to lower the tire down as much on a trip that I do.

I have a drop down and it’s great if I ever have to swap the spare out for obvious reasons, but opening the rear area to get to my tools, recovery gear and everything else just sucks. On the trail, it’s even harder. I also built the support too flat before the curve up and I’ve drug it across a couple of obstacles.

I’ve never had a flat to need the spare (knock on wood) but I go into the rear area all the time.

This is Bronco video. Nice a clean.

Some great ideas being posted. I did find a double sheer hinge that I’m trying to fab up to the existing tubing. I’m going to have to add some tube for support or fab up some type of bracing.

THIS is what I want for the CUCV. want to keep the original bumper.
If it doesn't need to be a kit sold to the masses, I imagine it would not be so complicated to make, right? :eek1:
