has anyone used or seen a roll cage kit from swracecars? i have a 1972 k5 and am in need of a roll cage. i would prefer to have a full cage to protect the passengers in the back. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
chris

Part of my chassis is made from an S&W kit. Its ok, the bends weren't perfect and you have to cut and notch a fair amount of the tube. I also don't feel they left enough room between the A pillar and B pillar.

If you don't have a bender and want a bolt/weld in type kit, its ok.

wow that was fast, thanks for the input. any suggestions where to get a good roll cage?

I will do all of my own tube work from now on.

AFAIK, If you want to buy a kit you really only have the S&W kit and the Jegs kit (and those may even be the same thing).

i would love to build my own, but no access to a welder or tubing bender anymore. i worked for a small race shop about 10 years back. dont know if my old boss is still around. i might have to break down and pay the money for someone to build it for me. there is an article in this months petersons offroad about a red 1972 k5 which has a roll cage I am looking for.

I have the S&W with the "family cage" option. Definitely not the best cage out there, but a pretty good deal for what you get. When I priced it out several years ago I was going to have a hard time just buying the straight sticks of tubing for what the S&W kit delivered cost.

Unlike some Jeep kits I've seen, there is still quite a bit of fab and setup required for this. If I did it again with the same kit there are a few ways I would set it up differently and maybe do a few tweaks to it.

i live in southern california. does anyone know of a good shop that fabs roll cages?

I put the DOM tube S&W kit in my 74 blazer. I didn't get the family part of it. The kit is made after you order it, and is bent and cut on computer controlled equipment. Some of the notching is already done for you, and I thought the bends were all very good. Here is a link to some of my assembly pics. I did add some tube to tie the seats to the cage.

I got the s&w kit in my blazer. There are several picts in my gallery here of the install. I have since added the family bars.
It was a good price and pretty straight forward. I was able to get it done in a few nights with a buddys welder. I did add bars for the seat mounts and the door bars which I love. I did not tie it to the frame, though it did stiffen up the entire chasis quite a bit.
Definitly not a custom cage but I did not have the time or money for that. I am pleased with how it turned out for the money and time spent.

in response to icehouse...that looks great. did you add to the kit or is that how it come? thanks for the info

does that roll cage give you the option to tie it to the frame? or only to the body?

I'm pretty sure GM Truck Center in Burbank builds them. Don't know about price. My son in law just wen to work for a fab shop. They build race cars and trucks and have built Jeeps so I know they can handle it. (I know HE can since he's built 2 race trucks) I'll get the name tomorrow.

Quick comparison of the S&W cage versus my custom built cage.

I thought the S&W one sucked, fit was horrible, A pillers were bent wrong, didn't like how the family cage portion connected. Didn't make me feel safe. So I sold it for $500 and went the custom route.

the baja shop in orange camberg in huntington beach. Thier are lots of small private shops around socal. Just go to a speed shop/ off road shop and they can direct you

I talked with my son-in-law. He says they have all the tools to do a cage. He has no idea on price. If you're close to Sun Valley, it CMJ Racing Inc. 9103 Norris Ave. Sun Valley 91352 (818)768-9393 or [email protected]. Good luck

No option that I know of to tie to frame.
I think that they have some other ad on that goes thru the dash to the frame.
You would have to fab frame mounts to the 6-8 points.
