I am thinking of putting the 700R4 from an 89 Suburban inot my 86 Pickup that currently has a T400. Can I just put a non-lockup torgue converter in it or do I have to get the retro kit to put it in the older truck?

Whats a "retro-kit"...??

I just realized what you meant.. If you want a "non-lock up" you need the change-over kit.. although to be honest, I do not know why you would want to...

I would think, for off-road, the factory "high-stall", 2000 rpm lock-up would be the best choice... good off the line pull, with-out the slip at cruise...

Even the stock converter is like shifting into another gear when it locks-up..

A 1989 trans is an "aux-valvebody trans" and can be made to go into lock-up automaticaly, with NO electrical connections...
