hate how quiet my 355 is, and i am running true duels with no cat and stock manifolds.

dont have money for flowmasters or anything like that, but was wondering, if i take the mufflers off will that hurt anything?
backpressure problems?
02 sensor problems?

dont wanna screw up a nice running carbed crate mouse motor, but would like it to sound throatier:popcorn:

thanks in advance

Usually only your wallet.
And your ears.

You want to be a long way out in the boonies before you drive with no mufflers.
There is just something about that sound that really seems to PO a cop.

I'm guessing its offroad only. If you want to street drive it, see if you can't find a set of cutouts.
Last ones I saw for sale were in J.C. Whitney.

Running unplugged will affect your backpressure, but not necessarily in the way you expect.
In some cases it can even increase it due to BRAIN FART!! I cannot think of the term.
If it were RF, it would be a reflected standing wave, but either way, its should not be enough to bother much.

Supposedly running open manifolds will burn valves due to air hitting the hot exhaust valves, but that will not be a problem with pipes.

And there has been a lot of debate about that being true or not anyway.

I don't see how it could effect the oxygen sensor unless some air got back to it, but if that happens, you have more trouble than open pipes.
It would take a seriously burned valve to do that.

It will hurt your wallet,if nothing else, when the fuzz pull you over and cite you for excessive noise and defective equipment!...it could set off your check engine light if you remove the mufflers possibly...

I know all about being broke, but you can get cheap cherry bomb mufflers (glass packs) at places like Advanced Auto for 20-25 bucks each....you could put exhause cut out on it too ,for more $$$$$.....personally I like a vehicle to be quiet, its less irritating to drive and wont attract attention from cops, and I love the looks on peoples faces when your "sleeper" blows their doors off at a stop light and they never suspected you have a "hot" motor under the hood...

plus no mufflers makes the cackly crappy sound which sounds like a$$ IMHO :D I have one of those thrushes on my burb and love the sound of it.

If you do replace the mufflers, crank it once with the old ones off just to see.
Couple of minutes would not hurt anything, and you will see what we mean.

There's something about cutting the exhaust off a car that makes it sound cool... demo derby car cool, not drive around town cool.

LoL..ive driven 10miles with open headers to the muffler shop twice now. lol But yea, like others said, I wouldnt run around like that , with no mufflers on your truck.

Imo open exhaust sounds bitchen at idle, and bitchen at wot.

Anything inbetween sounds like ass aka regular driving. Plus you need to have the power/speed to back that sound up

Go with the Thrush muffs described. I have done exhaust on all sorts of crap and would choose these over anything.

Too short of pipe will kill your low end and MPG, and witha a gas sucking dog of a V8, a proper exhaust will help you build power

This

My truck has been open exhaust with long tubes, 2 feet of pipes an dumps for almost 2 years. It sounds like a beast at wide open throttle and when I shift but the rest of the time its annoying.

Probably your ears.

But if you want loud without big bucks, just buy some Flowmaster knockoffs. The patent expired and now you can get about the same sound much cheaper. 40-series are about as loud as you'd want on a street or trail rig.

I run a cat and no muffler. Love it! Just saying.

Ten bucks says those 2 chamber Thrush mufflers are very very similar to a flowmaster 40 series. I heard something about that the patent expired on the 40 series or something and now other companies are copying them for cheaper.

You mention O2 sensors and then say it's a carbed motor? If that's the case then the O2 sensors don't do anything to the actual running of the engine.

I'm also not sure about the thought that straight pipes will cause issues with valves.......what's the difference between having a muffler, especially a straight-through style, and just a section of pipe? I could possibly see if you had no exhaust manifolds or headers at all, but I see all types of mud trucks and race cars just running open headers and zoomies and have never heard of them having problems.

yeah the (myth/prob depending on who you ask) only goes for open heads. no maniflods or headers at all.
