In my shop. Doing stuff.
I have been doing enough "will it run" stuff, I am in need of a temporary gas can with an electric pump. I have an idea in my head. Just want to see if someone has already done a slick unit.

I am thinking of using a rider lawn mower tank, m12 battery and a 12v pump. I want the lines from the tank and all electrical connections to be permanent. Flip a switch and it starts pumping.

Boat tank plus battery, pump, filter, and switch? I would also be cautious about connections being sound. No need for sparks on the electrics mounted to a potential bomb.

Now you have taken all of the suspense out of it.

But yes. I want the connections, except for the battery, to be permanent. Tank mostly sealed except for the vent. Right now, I run a fuel pump with alligator clips to a car battery and the hose stuck into the mouth of a 5 gallon gas can. The safety shut off is pulling the clips off of the battery.

Keep in mind your switch may spark internally when you flip the switch. Getting a sealed switch would be a good idea. But you are looking at $125-300 for a class I/DIV 2 switch if you want explosion proof. I think an automotive waterproof switch would likely be OK here.

But something like a hazardous location estop switch would be perfect if $200 price doesn't kill your budget.

I picked up a 6 gallon boat tank from a friend. I am going to make something using it.

I don't expect to have gas running on the ground or leaking. As long as I inspect the hose, I should be good.

How did Wades shop blow up?:dunno::doah:

Class 1 DIV 2 rules go way above and beyond what is really needed, safety at all costs kind of approach. A $20 waterproof switch is going to meet your needs and theoretically still not blow you up. Although, it is not the liquid that burns/explodes, but rather the vapors. Keeping the fuel inside the system is the #1 way to prevent vapors from floating around where you don't want them.

My dad used to use leaded gasoline as a bug killer and parts degreaser, all while smoking a cigarette. I never saw him have issues. My brother and I used to use gas to get our burn barrel going when parents were not looking, I lost some eye lashes and got 2nd degree burns one out of 100 times doing it. All that matters is the air/fuel mixture is right for it to explode on you.

My older brother and I used to wash parts for dad with gas at the back of the property. The gas and oil mix caught fire once when dad flicked his cigarette down the slope. Woosh. That was some black smoke.

Don't tell OSHA.

I finally spent some time on this today. Gutted the charger so I could use it as a battery holder. Sealed switch. Extended the tank pickup to the bottom with steel tube. Seems to work. Now I need some non ethanol fuel.

I plan on filling it 1/2 way.

Do you already own any scepter military fuel cans?

There’s a really slick (and it’s origional military) replacement cap that’s got quick release fittings for fuel out and return. Meant to be an emergency gas tank and run directly from the jerry can. I have seen the origional scepter kit on eBay in the past.

Not as cool obviously, but apparently the inside threads of the Scepter fuel cans are the same as 2"(?) threaded PVC. Not sure if any of the PVC options play well with anything other than diesel, but there are enough PVC plugs and caps that you can build pretty much anything you'd likely need with those. I'll probably use one of the PVC bits to add a pickup tube/hose for my diesel heater.

Just a thought….

What about a water filled fire extinguisher. You know the ones you charge with air. Fill with gas charge hook to carb.

To much pressure? Maybe a regulator on the hose?

marked to hell and back that it is opposite of a fire extinguisher of course!
