So we went looking for a family hot rod Saturday. I've been working on Camaros for the last couple years (84 SC and 89 RS). This last summer, we realized we needed something that could seat all 5 of us. We took the SC on a trip to Pigeon Forge and while we were there, Mom and Dad had to haul around one of our kids the whole time because there aren't enough seats. So, after we put it into cold storage for winter, I started looking, originally for a G-body wagon. After months, I broadened my search to include other G-bodies, as well as A-bodies.

Last month, a 71 Skylark caught my eye. I started talking to the owner some and we decided to get together so I could check it out. Since it is about a 5hr drive for us, we hooked up the trailer and arranged to see several cars while we were down there.

Fast forward to Saturday, we go see the Skylark and another 68 Skylark. Both basket cases and more (body) work than I wanted to deal with. Both needed two full quarters and trunk pans, one needed an A pillar and the other needed a whole top. Damn GM and their full vinyl tops! :doah: Well, everyone else I had spoken with wouldn't answer their phones or e-mail Saturday, so we decided to head back home. However, being we were just between Johnson City and Elizabethton TN, we decided to go back on 11E though Bristol.

I'm fairly vigilant when driving, always looking on the sides of the road for cars for sale, just a habit. Well, just as we were approaching Bristol Motor Speedway, a bright orange K5 on the left hand shoulder caught my eye. Sitting next to it, was this little 84 SS. I wheeled a quick u-turn (as quick as a Suburban and 18' trailer can) and we pulled up on the side of the road at it. Guy came out, we dickered a little, and I took her home for $2250 cash.

History: The guy I bought it from is the original owner. He bought it from his Grandpa, who worked at a local Chevy dealership. He told me he paid about 12K for it, payments were $330/mo and 13% interest. His three kids learned to drive it and it was their first car (as witnessed by the cut up radio harness and funky re-upholstery job.) 131k miles on it, with a new motor about 10k ago. 3spd floor shift, but I think the old 200M is about dead. It took a quart of fluid to load it on the trailer.

The lower passenger quarter panel behind the door has a rust spot in it and around all the windows is starting to rust a little. I figure I can pop out the windows and clean up all them this summer. Patch the quarter and start cleaning it all up. I've got the 350 from my 1984 Camaro to go in it, but I'm not sure how to do the transmission. The Monte Carlo is a 3spd, but I have a built 700R4 in my Camaro. I'm wanting to do a manual transmission swap next year, so I'm considering rebuilding the 200M to use this summer. My Dad was a transmission man in GM dealerships for several years in the late 70's and early 80's. Hoping to keep the A/C and cruise control working as I go.

Also, just I finished loading the car, there behind the car and on one knee, I proposed to the love of my life. The woman I've been with for 7 years now and have three beautiful kids with. She said yes! So Saturday was an AWESOME day in my life! :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot:

I love that color blue on the ss montes, and I don't see too many around.

That is not actually the factory blue. That is a very lame spray job with too much metal flake and about 5 shades too light. I want to go back to the original blue after I get the body cleaned up. I've heard that only the 84 SS cars came in blue.

I would do a good rebuild on the 200. That's a good trans and the fuel mileage savings will be worth it over a t350. I like them better than 700s too.

Nice ride. I like them g bods

It is a 200M, not a 200-4R. It is a 3 speed same as the TH350, just smaller and designed for smog-era horsepower. I've got a good chunk of change in that 700R4 already, I hate to just mothball it when I need a transmission. Although I will be looking at sticking its guts in the K case 700 in my K5 once the manual swapnstarts on the Monte.

one of the few decent bodies from the 80's imo...

I think those montes came with 4 speeds in mexico. I just did a quick google. You my be able to locate some original parts for your swap. Also, I'm fairly certain the ss only came with a th350 before the 200-4r. If someone changed the trans it may be different.

Nice to see one that's not on 24s like all the hoodrats do around here :doah:

The mexican ones supposedly did, but you could get them in El Caminos and some Pontiac in the states. Quite a few Malibus came with a 3spd manual. My Dad has a friend who bought a 83 SS with the factory four speed manual, don't know how he got it, but Dad worked at the dealership that sold it.

I'm looking at doing a T-56 swap with this one though. Gotta do some research on what all I need to find for it. I will look into which transmission it has, but I didn't think the G-bodies ever had a TH350.

My '84 SS had the 3 speed as well. IIRC it said Metric on the pan, so I assume 200M.

That shifter is kind of an odd set up. All it does is pull a cable that turns a column shift steering column with out a lever. Did that make sense? Next time you put it in gear look at the column and you'll see what I mean.

Hope you enjoy it, I had a great time with mine. I'm just glad gas was $1/gal when I had it- 3000 RPM at 60 MPH is no economy car.

Well, I've been researching putting a Tremec T-56 Magnum 6 speed in it. Looks like it'll run around $3800, give or take. That's not in the budget this year but I think it will be in this car's future. This summer is mainly about body work and getting my current 350/700R4 swapped in I believe.

I have just about everything to do a t-5 swap. I'm fairly certain the trans is a world class t-5 but I would have to verify that. All the parts are out of a third gen. I believe a 90ish trans am. If that interests you let me know.

Subscribed... always liked the Montie SS.:thumb:

I had a black 80 montie with 8inch Vette rallys, called it my drug runner car? :dunno: Beat the **** outta that car...and it loved/I loved it. :D

I appreciate the offer, but I have a 92 RS Camaro with all that stuff already, but want the original G-body style mechanical linkages and the aftermarket trans for the strength.

Have not touched this thing yet. Still sitting in Dad's tractor shed. We've spent the last three weekends on the road looking at trucks. :doah: Gonna be cruising weather soon, better get on the ball!

So overwhelmed with emotion by your project score you decided to propose? :haha:

Just giving you a hard time man, congrats on the engagement!:thumb:

I will check it out.

If I can sell my spare riding mower this evening I'm going to see a man about a 454. :D

*edit: had to work tonight, supposed to meet up with mower kid tomorrow....
