Texas to Moab trip planning thread

Alright. I know it is 7 months out, but I am going to start to get a plan for my trip. I will probably be riding solo, so I plan on stopping and sleeping. As of right now, I plan on leaving Tx at 8am on Wednsday the 17th. I plan on stopping at around 8pm, the same day, to relax and chill out, have a beer and dinner and sleep. I will leave at 8 am the next morning and be in Moab about 2pm on the 18th. I hope to find some CK5 people to hang out with and swap some stories and get to know some faces.
I am thinking that my stopping point along the way, will be around the 40 and 491 intersection. Gallup New Mexico. If anyone wants to join me at any point along the way, feel free.
It looks like I will be stopping about every 400 miles for fuel. Unless my wife packs me an extra 30 sandwiches, I will be eating every fuel stop.

Post up
Let me know what your plans are.

Dont have as detailed of plans as you do Steven, but i do know i want to give myself plenty of time to get there and relax, no rush. My buddy will most likely be riding passenger with me. Your plan sounds pretty good to me actually. And id feel alot better myself traveling in a pack of rigs that way if, god forbid, something does happen, im not alone.

Im figuring about $1000 in diesel round trip for me. Im unsure of my actual mileage haulin a blazer, but i figure between 7-10mpg.

Anyone know if truck stops/gas stations are easy to come by on hwy 40 and interstate 491? Dont wanna end up in out in BFE and runnin on fumes.

I will have details like the fuel stations, way before I leave for the trip. You know how I kinda over prepare for stuff.I may borrow an auxiliary fuel tank, just in case. lol
I am probably going to get a "AAA" membership in early summer to have access to cheaper hotel rates and roadside assistance. I will have a CB in the Dodge and the Blazer. I will have a killer GPS also. One of the ones like the the desert racer guys use. It will help me get there, if I need it, but it is going in the Blazer once we hit the rock. My route, as of right now, has me on 287(40) out to 491. There are a ton of Hotels around that intersection in Gallup.
Hopefully I can meet some CK5 guys on the way there or the way back. I will be stopping in Amarillo on the way back, to sleep and eat.

My route plan, as it is now, allows for alot of time to BS or make extra stops. I should get there and not be drained ,with plenty of time for adult beverages.

Well, all i know now is im following you:haha: You over prepare and i take what i feel i need. If i am able to get my cousins truck ill have an auxilery tank, but in my own truck if theres plenty of fuel places, i dont feel the need.

I still got a few things to figure out, like a trailer(if im going to buy one here soon or rent one for that week), what necessities i must do to the blazer between now and then, and make sure my truck will be ready also.

BB or bust

My route, as of right now, has me on 287(40) out to 491.

287 is not the same as I40. 287 from DFW to amarillo and then get on I40 to gallup and head north on US491 and then to US191. I40 is a major hi-way and there is plenty of gas/diesel along the way. when i went in 03, i had to stop every 2 hours and fill up again. :doah:

72blazer and I are planning the trip also. I was planning on the last weekend of September, but oh well. I look forward to wheeling with you guys, but dread the trip. We already set some stuff up with some guys off of Pirate4x4, to be able to wheel in Las Cruces.

You are welcome to follow/lead with me. Only thing to be aware of is the fact that I will have a top speed around 65 and I will be stopping for the night in Gallup.

I've been kicking the idea around, but that's a long damn way. I don't mind driving the thousand miles, just have concerns about mechanicals. I could trailer the Chalet, but my F250 will have around 180,000 miles by then.

I guess if the Ford goes down, I could trailer it and pull with the Blazer.

Hey will you guys stop whining about how far it is, the WV guys made it last year, so can you :D.

Y'all need to put out some good short vibes not these long what if it brakes vibes :D

easy for you to say, you live what...2 hours away :doah::haha:

As ProjectFreedom already mentioned, we're planning the trip, but we're planning on leaving a bit earlier to make a stop or two in New Mexico, if anyone's interested to tag along. Yea I'm figuring about $1500 worth of diesel at WORST conditions...this means I'm putting fuel mileage at 10 mpg (Dodge dually loaded with two full size rigs, gear, trailer, etc) & diesel at $5 :eek1:. Anway, we still need to finish our junk, get our trailer, and book our lodging. I think we're driving straight through...unless one of us gets the sh!ts. :haha: Here's the thread for the NM stuff:

I just crossed 257xxx in my 99 cummins.... :doah:You got nothing to complain about. haha

I don't mind the distance, but I have never driven my 92 Dodge that far. It is an unknown. :confused:I am doing lots of prep to make sure it has no problems along the way.

I would love to wheel in NM, but it would only be on the way back. I am going to put too much time and money and effort into this trip to take a chance of breaking before I get to Moab.:doah: I would happily destroy my stuff after though.:wink1:

What he said. As long as time permits, im down for a full thrashing AFTER moab.

I would like to stop at 4 corners on the way to or from, looks like we will be passin right by on 491. Too bad white sands isnt closer to our route.

Yep, AZ, CO, NM & UT all meet at a common corner.

I should be leaving my house around 6am. Just keeping the thread updated as to my future plans.
