I am in the process of gathering the stuff to do a 205/241 doubler and had thought about putting a 2.75 first gear on my Th400.The gain doesnt seem to be a whole since the stock 400 is 2.48.Whos' done it and would ya do it again.

To me,on paper,it look's like alot of trouble for not much gain.I know I could with a 700 and have a better 1st but I would have to completely change my set up plus have to buy/build a trans.

Same reason people run a 465 with a doubler and a lomax.More lo gear.

And IMO, that's lower gears for the novelty of having ridiculously low gears. The doubler by itself is more than enough.

So I guess I'm saying that, IMO, the lower first gearset isn't worth it if you have a doubler.

So they can do some serious web-wheelin' smack talking.

A 241/205 doubler gives you a 5.44:1 low gear versus less the 4:1 with the traditional 203/205 doubler, which way more of a different than the TH400 low gearset versus the standard.

A guy in our club just built a Jeep with a NV4500, 10:1 Atlas 4-speed, and 5.13s, with 37" tires...sounds cool on paper but he has yet to find any practical need for the 10:1 low range (almost 300:1 crawl ratio) besides playing in the parking lot.

sure you dont need the 10:1 in the atlas but its got a sweet 5.44 (i think) to 1 2nd gear which is sweet..this will prolly be the next tcase i buy when my hybrid 208 takes a dump on me

No, it has 1:1, 2.72:1, 3.8:1, and 10.34:1........all of the Atlas 4-speeds have a 2.72 planetary gearset, than combined with the choice of other standard Atlas gear sets (I think 2:1, 3:1, 3.8:1). The 2.72 acts just like a "doubler" t-case setup. In my opinion any of the "4-speed" Atlas cases really only give you 3 practical speeds, you either have two really close to each other or one that is too low to be reasonable. Not saying I wouldn't put one in my truck if I found it sitting on my front steps with bow on it......but wouldn't pay the money for one.

I think most people are missing the total point of the lower first gear. If you drive your rig on the street then the lower 1st gear might be worth it. It would depend on if you wanted a little more off the line. As far as offroad goes, no I don't think it is worth the added cost.

I think the lower 1st gear is more along the lines for the drag race crowd. If you've got a big heavy car that's good on the top end. But has slow 60' times, then the lower gear will help (it could also help the top end, if the motor can pull it). It wouldn't be as big a change in the RPM's at the end as a axle gearing change would be. I.E. 4.10-4.56

It's almost exactly the same. Going from 2.48 to 2.75 is right at a 10% difference, so is a 4.10 to 4.56 gear swap.

From my experience this 10% difference is barely, if at all, noticable and not worth the money is costs to either regear both axles or change the TH400 planetary. Sure, if it cost the same I would jump on the 2.75 gearset...but it doesn't cost the same......

600 bucks is way too much

I'd do it for 250-300

I think he actually wants it to work when its done:rolleyes:

leave it to folks who know what they are doing

Maybe you could do it for him after you figure out how to fix a tail light

Ps: My post was about the cost of the gear sets, clearly I need to specify for those who have a hard time comprehending

oh tailights are easy its the hillybilly wiring that can make it a pain in the ass, that is if your talking about my toyota post. now rebuilding a tranny, thats a little more difficult, i would know because i have rebuilt one, it was only one so of course im not an expert so i would not offer my services. i know better than to shoot my mouth off and pretend to know everything, because i know if i was that kind of person it would eventually catch up to me and someone would call me out and make me prove it.

so no i would not offer to fix it.

as for your post about the price of gear sets, your right you were not offering your services. i just automatically jumped to the conclusion that you were acting like you always do and thinking you know everything and have done everything.

but no need to get your panties in a bunch, you were acting mature for once and i couldnt belive it, good for you :waytogo: keep it up and maybe some day someone will take you serious in this world:rolleyes:

Thanks for that life changing post

When i cracked the case in my 400 i looked into this, I couldn't justify the extra $600 for the lower first gear. Although, it being my DD i always wanted a little extra off the line.
