thinking bout running a th350 in place of my 700r4. I've heard the 350 & 400 are alot stronger & will take more abuse. Also I believe the the tail shaft has the same spline count for the '91 10b rear & shaft. Any opinions would be helpfull. Thanx in aadvance for any help on my decision.:doah:

Personally I'd rather have a 700R4 built up with all the goodies. Just as stout as a TH350, lower first gear, and oh yeah, OD.

700-R4's had some design issues in the early years (which can be addressed), and are not as well understood by most people as vacuum-modulated trannies. They can be built to do any job a TH350 would do just fine, plus you get the benefits AJM mentioned.

If the abuse you're talking about couldn't be handled by a TH350, then you should be looking at a TH400 or 4L80E to begin with. These are strong, durable trannies, but also big and heavy and turn power into heat and mechanical loss.

Okay, I'm going to hi-jack the thread.

Does the 243 transfer case from a 700r4 bolt up to the th350?

Crossmember and driveshaft? Just steal those off a K5 with a factory th350

then shifter rods and such need to come off donor truck?

Am I missing anything here?

My 700r4 took a shift on me and I've got to get it back running as its my daily driver. If I can get a th350 in there cheaper and faster than I can get my 700r4 rebuilt, I'll go that route. I got 8 days until I have to leave for Lafayette. Truck has 2.73's so I can deal with the lack of OD in the th350. I've only got 1st, 3rd, and reverse. I'm sure those gears are going to go out sooner or later.

241 I think you mean?

I know the opposite swap doesn't necessarily work as a bolt in - TH350 to 700R4.

here are the pros cons from what i've read and everything

700r4
not as strong but i have a shift kit(50 bucks more)
o.d. so good on and off the highway and gearing isn't AS important as a 350
its not bad, it really isn't, wheels great for mud IMO and great on the road
low rpm

350
you have to find one and rebuild it
its crap off the line
****ty on highway
stronger for offroad
high rpm

I have done this swap several times if you have a good trans guy who has been around awhile he will no about the spacer that is used with a long out but th350 with this set up you will not have to change anything except the indicator on the dash. This was a very common swap back in the early days of the 700 but as they improved the trans it became less common. I did it for one reason and one reason only. I AM CHEAP!!! cost i was getting from my trans guy for rebuild on a 700 with a converter approx $1,000 cost for 350 rebuild with a convertor $390.

I have been going back and forth on this issue as well. Although i am between a TH400 and 700R4. I have decided to go with the Th400. I want the mileage and first gear of the 700 but i dont want to give up strength to get it. I know the 4l80e would be the answer to my prayers but it just doesnt fit in the budget. There is a reason GM put the TH400 in 1 ton vehicles:D It all depends on what you want from your rig.

So the 241 transfer case bolts to the th350. The only thing I need is a 4wd th350 and this spacer that you speak of? More info please... No need to purchase a mount, driveshaft just bolt the transmission up with the spacer?

Thanks for your info.

Chris

TH 350 is no stronger than 700R4. They are basicly the same trans except the 700 has overdrive. IMHO the later 88 and up 700r4s are stronger stock than TH 350s.
If you want a stronger trans go with a TH400

personally I see th350s and 700s as very similar like some others have mentioned. yes the 700s did have some design flaws early on but also have many advantages over the 350s. I prefer to stick with 350s though, around here at least, they are cheaper, more plentiful, easier to get parts for and personally I think they are easier to work on. but my truck never sees the highway so overdrive doesnt really make any difference to me.

i have a 700r4 with a shift kit, and i beat the hell out of it, and she keeps asking for more. Its been in the truck for 2 years. my next one will be the th400.

I had my 700r4 rebuilt not to long ago with lots of goodies, even though I used a damn stock rebuild kit which I regret now... The only thing I would ever replace it with would be the 4L80E... O.D. will come in handy when my 5.13's go in.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I don't know if the 241 and 208 are interchangable. I always used a 208 .The trans you need is a long output car trans the spline count is the same and I am pretty sure my trans guy gets the adapter from Trans-dapt . Hope this helps?

I havent had any problems with my 350 minus the fluid leak and in real cold days on start up the automatic portion dosent work:confused: have to shift it manualy until it warms up. Ive treated mine mildly compared to most people on here. But no o.d. so gas mileage aint great but its one less thing to break
