I am going to look at a th400 4wd tonight and want to get some help identifying it.

I have read the case is thicker. If so, can I take a measurement anywhere, like the bell housing, to determine if it a 4wd or 2wd?

I also read some stuff about a K cast/stamped in it somewhere. Where is this K at?

the best way to tell is look where the inspection cover bolts up to the tran. if it has 6 bolts its a 4x4 case. the k is stamped on the front top part some 400s some also have hd on them

It's the 79 & newer cases (2wd or 4wd) that are the thicker cases, not all but most. Also, not all thick cases will have an "HD" or "K" cast on them. The ones that do have the letters on them will have them on top of bellhousing area and the letters will be 2"~3" tall.

An example of the thick case can be seen in my Webshots album.
