Ok i have a TH400 trans out of a 2wheel drive. What all is involved to use it in a 4x4 application? is it just a matter of swapping output shafts or is it more involved than that?

Search is your friend. Loose the tailhousing & swap the shafts. Swapping the shaft requires a complete tear down.

It all depends on what t-case you're using. A 2wd 400 with a short tail bolt on yoke will fit a pre-'85 (figure 8 pattern) 205 set up (w/ short 32 spline input, of course). Other t-case configurations will require a tailshaft change.

If it's like TH350s, you can cut the tailshaft; no need for a teardown. Check AdvanceAdapters.
