The Brandy Build

A build taking a faded, rusty, 1988 k5 and transforming it into a more or less restored, 1974 full convertible.
thats exactly what i did. It still just smeared. I went with a more abrasive wire wheel and it seemed to cut through better. Brake clean and degreaser id share a photo but i dont want to hi-jack your thread.
I guess for me all the gunk was dried on, the truck it came out of probably hasn’t run in years and just sat in a tree line so I’m guessing that made a difference, I had no issues I felt like the wire wheel did great, I did use brake cleaner to wipe it down before painting. Good luck with it man.

yeah, the unit I got was out of a truck that threw a rod right before It got yanked out. Still wet. Obviously it had a leak somewhere. Got it cleaned up enough to throw the gaskets on. Im going to use acetone before i throw the primer on. Yours turned out awesome. Hope mine turns out that good.

Thanks man, yours will look great, just use high temp paint!

So I mentioned before how bad the chemical paint stripper was doing for me, well today we had 55 degree weather here in Ohio and I did my first coat of stripper on the drivers door and it finally worked like it should have from the beginning. I’m not sure if it was because of the temperature or because this door came off of a different vehicle and I hadn’t dealt with that specific paint yet but I’m not complaining. I was able to get most of the paint off with just one coat and it was very satisfying. I had been heating up the shop as much as possible before I used the stripper but honestly I probably don’t get it above 45 in there. AF4693F8-0CAA-4737-9B67-5F5156AD7834.jpeg

So I’ll get this one done quickly and maybe start on the body before the weather changes on Wednesday.

Be sure to wear a respirator, those chemicals are BAD stuff.

Does the stripper contain methylene chloride? wicked stuff, but works well

No they started taking all that stuff out, it’s advertised on the can now that they don’t have any of that in it. Probably why it’s not been working great.

Nice, I’ve never had any luck with the paint strippers. I always just sanded it off with 80 grit. Every time I used the stripper it would only take so much off and then leave a nasty residue. Might be because of the climate here from what it sounds like.

Yeah it works better with warm weather.
I love working with it.
I hate sanding.

I sure love it when it works, seems like the trick is really thick coats in warm weather.

I snapped a quick picture of the blazer today, it sure is ugly right now, but in the next few weeks I hope to have it all down to bare metal and that will look much better. B7752C0C-5057-40D5-99DB-8F9FB8247402.jpeg
I also really miss the way it looks with the top on.
I don’t think I mentioned this but it has a really handy cutout for the fuel sending unit. I’m going to drop the tank and paint it though so I’ll just switch it out at that point but it’s pretty nice to have.

Someone did the work for you there.
We all do this for future repairs

I’m seriously considering converting the blazer to the full removable top. If anyone knows where I can get the parts to convert it (windshield frame and hard top) I would appreciate the tip, otherwise I’ll be looking on the local marketplace. I’ve considered it for awhile and I said this before but if I’m going to build this “dream vehicle” I might as well make it how I want it.

Someone here was selling the parts, I believe he is in Wyoming.
I have the doors, sold everything else
